4 BENEFITS OF MAKING THE MOVE IN-HOUSE
When is the best time to move in-house? It’s the most common question among junior and mid-level lawyers. Whilst private practice provides you with the foundational skills and experience for your legal career, there are significant benefits to moving in-house. We explore some of those benefits below, whether they involve having an attractive salary package, a great work/life balance, a broad range of work or working directly with the business.
1.???Higher Salary
When first making the move in-house, the salary packages on offer are attractive and, in a recent trend, can be higher than private practice salaries at the same level. Our data supports this - of the private practice lawyers we moved in-house for the first time in FY21/22, all but one moved for a salary increase.
In a very competitive market, companies are willing to pay exceptional salaries to attract top talent from reputable firms for their in-house teams. In many cases, in-house teams aren't bound by the same pay parity restrictions of private practice teams. If there aren't as many lawyers in the same 'banding', there may be scope to offer higher salaries to new starters.
2.???Work / Life Balance
As a lawyer in private practice, you will inevitably be faced with high-pressure situations, time-constraints, demanding clients and Partners and expectations to work longer hours. It can be difficult to retain a work/life balance for years on end. In-house roles offer the chance to break free from the demands of private practice. The hours are often less demanding and the work is generally more manageable. Plus, there are no billable hours!
3.???Broad Range of Work
Whilst in private practice, you may be destined to practice within one area of law, whereas in-house roles expose you to a wide range of work across the business. Most roles are broadly commercial and enable lawyers to immerse themselves within a range of legal practice areas relevant to the company's operation.
4.???Working Directly with the Business
In-house allows lawyers the opportunity to work with the business directly, as a business partner. By working with your internal clients, lawyers can influence strategic business decisions. Companies value candidates who are commercially minded and can interact well with various teams within the business.
Concluding Points
Whether you’re seeking a higher salary package, more work/life balance, a broader range of work or the opportunity to influence business decisions, there are significant benefits to a move in-house.
