1982 IDEAL BASIS
AMG finds the perfect base product for its own clientele in the new Mercedes-Benz 190 E. Capable of 215 km/h, the AMG 190 E 2.3 becomes the starting point for the first German Touring Car Championship (DTM) victories,
1984 THE POWER OF 8
AMG becomes an engine manufacturer. Melcher develops an entirely independent cylinder head with cutting-edge 4-valve technology. The innovative engine makes its way into the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC as a 5.0-liter V8. With 250 kW (340 hp) the car reaches a sensational 259 km/h. High demand from the US causes a significant growth spurt in business.
1986 HAMMER TIME
The new 4-valve cylinder head is not only used in the AMG version of the S-Class but also, and more importantly, in the mid-serie 124 sedan (and on the coupé starting in 1987) this car delivers an incredible 265 kW(360 hp) ?offers a radical 510 Newtonmeters, and reaches a top speed of 303 km/h. The sedan can even match exotic super sports cars in performance, far surpassing them in suitability for everyday use. The American car media is so impressed, they nickname it "The Hammer." To this day, it remains the symbol of the AMG legend in America.
1988 SERIES OF SUCCESS STORIES
AMG is increasingly growing into an official Mercedes-Benz motorsport partner. They don't just modify the Mercedes-Benz 190 E race cars, they also service and tend to them during the DTM. The various evolutionary stages of this car would go on to win 50 DTM victories before 1993.
1990 ALLIANCE
A written agreement formalizes closer cooperation between AMG and Daimler-Benz. Starting in 1991, AMG develops and manufactures sports cars for Mercedes-Benz, so-called complete vehicles. Accessories and replacement parts are added to the portfolio. AMG complete vehicles are marketed and sold by official Mercedes-Benz dealerships. Because AMG models now enjoy the same service guarantee as all Mercedes-Benz cars, they must live up to the same high quality standards as the brand with the star. This holds true to the present day.

1999 MERGER
The story that began when Erhard Melcher and Hans-Werner Aufrecht left Mercedes-Benz to start their own business comes full circle. DaimlerChrysler takes over 51% of Mercedes-AMG, and the merger is celebrated with a technology highlight. The V8 with 3-valve technology and dual ignition, developed entirely by AMG and manufactured in Affalterbach, is the new engine powering the E 55 AMG. Throughout the building process, each of these 5.5-liter engine is assigned a single mechanic. The "One man, one engine" principle has been applied to every AMG engine ever since.
