Our 3rd 4x4 of the month will look at the often hard-hitting, urbane work of Olivier Kugler. Probably best known for his extraordinary reportage images, his visual journalism has taken him from Iraqi Kurdistan to Cairo, China, Laos and beyond. ?Olivier’s work also extends into the more domestic side of life and he has created exquisite food illustrations, fiction covers and beautifully eloquent portraits. His sincerity and directness have won him a legion of admirers and many professional accolades.

Olivier Kugler's reportage illustration has an enormous amount of inherent power. Telling difficult and compelling stories is often important in his work and personalities flood the page through his exquisite draftsmanship. ?Olivier's work with refugees and his need to tell their inspirational stories prompted the fascinating book, Escaping Wars and Waves.?

It won the European Design Award's Jury prize for its initiative approach. ?It also won the ?Prix du Carnet de Voyage International and the Coup de Coeur Médecins Sans Frontières at the Rendez-vous du Carnet de Voyage.??

Olivier's portraits are at the heart of so much that he does. ?Often working from life, he is able to capture the depth of personality behind the image to help create relatable, appealing characters that carry an important narrative. It is perhaps his tireless work with refugees that allows him to draw out the stories behind the personalities and offer us a connection with his sitter which makes us want to read on.
