Do you know how lucky you are to be in leadership?
With St. Patrick's Day coming up this weekend, I wanted to share with you acronym of the five different ways that show that you are ?? lucky ?? to be in leadership.
?? The L in L.U.C.K.Y. stands for the LABELS that we're putting on our people.
We have unconscious as well as conscious biases... and you may not be aware of them. A good leader realizes that they have bad habits and seeks to identify their bad habits and make incremental improvements.
? Ask yourself: Am I labeling my people?
?? The U in L.U.C.K.Y. stands for the UNSAID things that really need to be said.
As you're reading this, I bet you're immediately thinking of something that you want to say - or UNsay - to someone on the team. Or, maybe in another department. A compliment. An apology. Whatever it is, LUCKY leaders recognize that they need to deal with the UNsaid things.
? Ask yourself: Is there something that has gone unsaid that I really need to say?
?? The C in L.U.C.K.Y. stands for COMPASSION.
Compassion is defined as "a deep awareness of the suffering of another's suffering." If you're ready to learn more about being a compassionate leader, I cover a lot of aspects about compassion in my new book Call for Compassion.
? Ask yourself: Do I know what my people are suffering about?

?? The K in L.U.C.K.Y. stands for KINDNESS.
Kindness is defined as "the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate". Bytheway, just because you're kind doesn't mean people get to walk all over you. Boundaries are a good thing, and you can have boundaries and still be kind.
? Ask yourself: Am I being friendly, generous, and considerate the way I want to be?
?? The Y in L.U.C.K.Y. stands for YESTERDAY.
Evaluate how yesterday went. Assess what went well that you want to continue doing going forward. Also, evaluate what didn't go well so that you can pivot and improve tomorrow. The trick is to do this often, so that not too much time goes by, and you've forgotten what went well and didn't go so well.
? Ask yourself: What's something I learned and what's something that could be better going forward?
Ultimately, being in leadership has its ups and downs. But, overall, I truly hope that you see how L.U.C.K.Y. you are to be a leader!

I love the quote from Seneca: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." The more you prepare and develop yourself as a leader, the more ready you'll be for the opportunities that come your way!
