#3DMQuickLessons: 7 Things To Consider Before Remodeling Your Bathroom
Beginning today, and spanning the next few weeks in the #3DMQuickLessons, we shall be exploring Remodeling your Home in the #3DMRemodellingSeries. We shall be looking at several spaces within the home and practical steps to take as well as considerations to make before embarking on a remodeling project for these spaces.
As with every space within the home, increasing the functionality as well as form must be at the heart of remodeling. At the end of a remodeling, a space must not only have undergone a major facelift, it must also have increased usability.
Today, we begin with the bathroom. What are some of the things to note before and while embarking on a bathroom remodel?
1. LAYOUT:
This would be a recurring theme throughout this series. When planning a remodel, one of the very first things to consider is, “What space am I working with?” The answer to that almost always determines the scale of your remodelling- what will be installed and what will be taken out, what will be done and what will be left out. Thinking of having a bathtub as well as a shower stall, a WC, cabinets, a mirror, great lighting and adequate ventilation sounds awesome. But that may likely be impractical if you’re working with a footprint of 3-4sqm.
2. PLUMBING
Unbeknownst to many homeowners, the wrong size of plumbing pipes are usually employed in the bathrooms; particularly drain pipes. Using a 2-inch pipe to drain water from bathrooms in a typical duplex isn't bad, However, for a apartment block that rises say 4floors, that same drain size will prove inadequate and lead to prolonged retainment of waste water. This often becomes exacerbated by the unavoidable build up of hair, grease and dirt that can quickly cause clogged pipes and become a nightmare.
Installing the right size of plumbing pipes can work wonders and forestall clogging altogether.
3. BATHROOM FIXTURES
Those taps and shower heads may have looked really great when your home was built a century ago. But chances are they have overstayed their welcome and over served their usefulness. It’s time to lay them to rest and opt for more modern fittings. While you’re at it, your toilet (WC) likely has to go. Your bathtub too- if you have one, or your shower stall. Your mirror. Your sink. Your wall tiles. Same goes for your water heater. Modern alternatives exist in a variety of colours and shapes and with more functionalities.
4. BATH TUB OR SHOWER
In an earlier #3DMQuickLessons article, we explored the pros and cons of bathtubs and shower stalls. That said, if you have a space big enough and a budget for it, there’s absolutely no reason why you can not have both.
5. TOILETS
Still on the subject of fixtures, floating toilets- most of them tankless, have surged in popularity. For good reason, they are a very sensible addition to your bathroom. Not only are they quite aesthetic, they also save precious space.
6. VANITY
Your bathroom needs a vanity. Luckily, there are tons of designs, of all colours and shapes and sizes to choose from. Do you want one that is wall-mounted or sits on the floor? Drawers or doors? Double wash basins or single? A vanity helps with storage and organizing things more neatly.
7. LIGHTING
For many reasons, an adequately-lit bathroom is a necessity. Lighting must be placed in such a way that it enhances- rather than impedes, visibility at the mirrors. Bright lighting proves particularly useful if you have to apply or adjust makeup, or shave or look for items.
These are great places to begin from when planning a remodeling of your bathroom.
