3D Standards for eCommerce: Why You Should Care

On Tuesday, October 27th, from 8-9 am PST, The Khronos Group’s 3D Commerce Panel will hold its Webinar on "3D Specifications and Guidelines", featuring guest-speakers from Amazon Imaging, Autodesk, DGG, DreamView, Microsoft, Shopify, UX3D, and Wayfair.

 It might sound like just another Tech seminar focused on behind-the-scene intricacies of computer graphics. Yet the work being done by these companies to develop industry-wide standards will permanently influence the way businesses and consumers interact in the near future. But what are '3D Standards' and how do they relate to you and your business?

In the words of Khronos Group President, Neil Trevett, 'The essential essence of (a)...standard is to enable things to communicate." Those 'things' are the phones, tablets, computers, and software through which you connect to potential eCommerce customers. Further, consider the 3D Commerce Group’s slogan: ‘Render Everything, Everywhere.”

Implementation of industry-wide standards for 3D graphics, Virtual, and Augmented Reality, will not only increase the versatility of your 3D assets and simplify your media distribution, but also extend the longevity of those assets. In other words, those beautiful, high-quality 3D models of your products will be less likely to have built-in limitations and obsolescence. 

As 3D computer graphic representations of products become ubiquitous - from furniture, medical devices, and home furnishings to toys, sporting goods, and clothing - manufacturers in every industry can benefit from the undeniable efficiency and value that 3D standards for eCommerce will bring.
