The 3Cs of Better Communication.

As a Team Coach I work with teams on many different areas but the one area that comes up more than area other area is COMMUNIACTION.

Communication may not be the reason I was brought in as a team coach but like with 1:1 coaching " The reason is not always the reason"

Regardless of the reason for Team Coaching I look at Team Communication before we move onto anything else, without effective communication the team simply limit how effective they can be.

The 3 Cs of Communication that I look at in the initial stages of the Team Coaching engagement are as follows:

CLARITY

We can easily establish how clear the communication is within the team by asking a few key questions and by using scaling as a questioning style. I find when we work through the clarity stage the team start to feedback their thoughts on the clarity of the communication and very quickly start discussing improvements that could be made. Not all teams have issues in this stage and if that's the case we discuss what's working in relation to clarity that may help other areas. Either way the team come away with ideas and open dialogue on topics they may not discuss in normal day to day

CONSISTENCEY

My work with Teams and in 1:1 coaching has shown me that the area of consistency is often an area that requires attention in the coaching setting, if we are trying to ensure effective communication then consistency is a key component to success.

In relation to consistency I will work with teams in the coaching setting to determine what is meant by consistency, what measures they currently have in place to ensure consistency and frequency of communication and how effective they are.

The team will usually discuss the type of communication tools they use, they will discuss their team meetings etc and this can throw up lots of interesting points to discuss further. The consistency discussion enables the team to look at the What and How of their communication and establish the best practice going forward.

COLLABORATION

Collaboration is a word that is thrown around a lot when we discuss teams but when we get to the crux of communication within the team environment this is the area that I have found that can be the biggest challenge.

As a concept most people agree it makes sense in relation to effective team performance but in practice its not as easy.

A lot of factors show up in the coaching space when discussing this topic that teams feel attribute to collaboration not being as good as it could be.

  • Promotion and recognition in the workplace tend to lean towards individual performance, there seems to be an emphasis on individual as opposed to team
  • Silo work environments leading to separation and disconnect across departments
  • TRUST - This is a big one, how can there be real collaboration without trust? and yet we expect teams to simply trust each other and get on with it without any help

The above examples are only a few of the reasons collaboration can be difficult to create, Team Coaching is a great way to help with Trust in a team and when trust is established Clarity, Consistency and Collaboration are areas that can be worked on in the Team Coaching setting with great outcomes.

Such important call outs Kate, great article, the goal of communication is to ensure it is done effectively, that you are actively listening and understanding, but also ensuring you are understood.. what's the point otherwise.. a value of mine when I meet knew people, is to listen and learn about them, it's all about them, not me..
