#376: Master the Art of Change Management with John Kotter's 8-Step Model

Introduction

In today's "People Skills" newsletter, we're looking at John Kotter's 8-Step Model of Change.

Kotter is a Professor of Leadership at the Harvard Business School in America and his model of change has become one of the most used approaches to managing change in today's businesses.

So, if you and your organisation are facing critical change programmes, you should stop what you are doing and study this model right now.

So, here are Kotter's 8 steps...

01. Create a Sense of Urgency

Highlight the need to act by showing the risks of not changing and the benefits of change.

Action You Must Take: Present compelling data and stories.

02. Build a Guiding Coalition

Assemble key leaders and stakeholders to help drive and support the change implementation.

Action You Must Take: Identify and recruit influential leaders who can champion the change.

03. Form a Strategic Vision

Develop a vision outlining what the future looks like and how change will help achieve it.

Action You Must Take: Develop a clear vision statement that aligns with the organisation's goals and outlines a straightforward path for the future.

04. Communicate the Vision

Share the vision so that everyone understands and aligns with it across the organisation.

Action You Must Take: Consistently communicate the vision through multiple platforms (meetings, emails, etc).

05. Empower Broad-Based Action

Remove obstacles and provide employees with the tools, resources, and authority to act.

Action You Must Take: Remove barriers, whether structural or emotional, by providing the necessary tools, training, and authority for employees to act.

06. Generate Short-Term Wins

Use early wins to push more changes, keeping momentum across the entire organisation.

Action You Must Change: Identify and execute on achievable goals that show immediate success, reinforcing that the change is working and worth pursuing.

07. Sustain Acceleration

Embed the change into the company culture through policies, behaviours, and leadership.

Action You Must Take: Build on momentum by quickly launching additional projects that further the change, preventing complacency from setting in.

08. Anchor Changes in the Culture

Reinforce the change by embedding it into all aspects of the company culture.

Action You Must Take: Integrate the new behaviours/processes into the everyday, reinforcing them through policies, leadership behaviours, and performance evaluations.
