Tragic Death of a World-Famous Beauty
Robert Burns (1759–1796).?Poems and Songs.?
[Vol. 6, pp. 396-406 of The Harvard Classics]
"But I, the Queen of a' Scotland, maun lie in prison strang." Burns sings of poor Mary bound by chains, yearning for the day when flowers would "bloom on her peaceful grave." (Mary, Queen of Scots, beheaded Feb. 8, 1587.)
Today’s reading is a series of poems written by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns.?This is the second time that Eliot has included Burns in his daily reading guide.?I really enjoyed the previous Burns’ poem, To a Mouse, so I was looking forward to reading today’s short collection of poems.
On my 39th day on this project, I have concluded that deep down, I really enjoy poetry.?Specifically, I enjoy reading the unique word selection that some of these famous poets used to describe common emotions and everyday situations. ?While I also enjoy reading poets using their creativity to describe places like the afterlife, gods, etc. it is their descriptions of common experiences that I can relate to with my own senses is what I most appreciate.
With the Lament on the Death of the Earl of Glencairn
THOU, who thy honour as thy God rever’st,?
Who, save thy mind’s reproach, nought earthly fear’st,?
To thee this votive offering I impart,?
The tearful tribute of a broken heart.?

The Friend thou valued’st, I, the Patron lov’d;
His worth, his honour, all the world approved:?
We’ll mourn till we too go as he has gone,?
And tread the shadowy path to that dark world unknown.
Have you ever had a realization why one method of learning appeals to you more than another??For example, some people are visual learners, while others prefer descriptive text.?
