The Plague of Milan
Alessandro Manzoni (1785–1873).?I Promessi Sposi.?
[Vol. 21, pp. 500-512 of The Harvard Classics]
Today’s reading is another excerpt from the 17th Century Italian novel, I Promessi Sposi.?This love story is set against the backdrop of a devastating plague that was sweeping across Italy at the time. As I read the text, many familiar concepts and themes started to emerge; public declarations, safety, protests, and corruption proving once again the evolution of human nature hardly changes over centuries.
