365 Day Project: Day 68

365 Day Project: Day 68

On Day 68, I wanted to share a few comments about my journey so far on this 365-day project.?

Some of my favorite authors:?Charles Darwin, Samuel Johnson, Richard Henry Dana, Jr., and Benjamin Franklin

Since I am about 20% of the way through my journey, here are a few of my key observations.

First, there is a great deal of variety in the authors, topics, etc. in the daily readings. I think Dr. Eliot carefully curated these selections because they follow themes of self-discovery, freedom, and humor. I now see that these themes have been important to most people throughout history and will continue to be important forever.

Second, being exposed to different literature is beneficial. For example, I am developing an appreciation of poetry that I never thought possible. I always thought of poetry as boring, too abstract and not very enjoyable. But then I read several of the famous poems included in this collection and realized just the opposite.

Last, even when I don't enjoy a particular reading, I can still see the value of exposure to the author and their work. If I hadn't been following a daily reading program, I would have avoided the author or subject after an initial reading of something I didn’t appreciate. For example, I didn't enjoy the first two readings from Benvenuto Cellini's autobiography, but the third was amazing and I was glad it was included in the program.

I am looking forward to the next 297 days’ worth of reading to discover more about classic literature, as well as myself!

Thanks for following my daily updates!

Best,

Matt
