Many postgraduate trainees in medical colleges in West Bengal are working long hours due to financial reasons, and that is a self-imposed duty arrangement. They receive a token monthly stipend from the college, which is insufficient. Instead of working eight hours a day for five days a week, they prefer to work for 40 hours straight. After their duties in the medical college, they take on additional work as senior resident medical officers in nursing homes or corporate hospitals in a similar manner, where they are paid a handsome hourly amount between Rs 150 and 225. They take only one day off during the week and often work six days a week round the clock. Private hospitals and nursing homes provide them with restrooms and meals, but in government colleges, they have to pay for their meals, and the facilities are not as good. There has been talk about the long 36-hour duty shifts after an incident at R.G. Kar Hospital in Kolkata without examining the facts.

Today morning we a group of professionals were in City Civil Court. Involuntarily we were observing those lawyers carrying huge files from one court hall ?? to another, simultaneously talking to clients, juniors, examining files, attending telephones.... Even lawyers and judges also work for 15 plus hours.?? Both legal and medical professions are so tiring. My father was an advocate and my sister is a doctor. I have seen both the professions closely at home. Constant reading, updating their experiences and skills, dealing with public... quite tiresome ?? What is inhuman???
