3.45 Billion Google Chrome users - Ransomware target: Why we should all be worried!

According to a recent article by David Winder in Forbes , "a Russian ransomware gang “Qilin” has developed a new attack method aimed specifically at Google Chrome users.” This isn’t your run-of-the-mill phishing scam. These attackers are using sophisticated techniques to slip past your defenses, leveraging Chrome to execute their malicious plans. These are the same team who held the UK hospitals to ransom.

Once they’re in, the game changes. Your business’s most valuable data is suddenly under siege. They lock it up, and you’re left with a gut-wrenching choice: pay the ransom or risk losing everything. - By the way, paying the Ransom means you are breaking the law.

Why This is No Longer just IT’s issue?

As a C-Level, your role is about safeguarding your company’s future. If you think cyber security is an IT issue you are very, very wrong! It’s now a business critical issue.

It’s no longer good enough to have a strong password to protect your company's digital assets. These cybercriminals are becoming more advanced, and a single password breach can lead to catastrophic results for any company not implementing this simple solution - It’s scary how simple the solution is and it doesn’t cost you anything!

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) are provided by many Software companies. Think of them as the digital equivalent of a deadbolt on your front door. Even if someone manages to steal your keys (your password), they still need that second key to get inside, they are provided for free but not mandated. As a C-Level you should know who doesn’t have 2FA/MFA enabled.

The Urgency of Protection

The hackers once in are harvesting all of users passwords stored in Google Chrome, where Chrome represents 65% of browsers, with 87 work passwords are stored there. As the Forbes article points out, "the ransomware gang's method of attack is not only innovative but also incredibly dangerous, particularly for businesses that haven't yet implemented robust cybersecurity measures." If your company hasn’t enabled 2FA/MFA, you’re leaving the door wide open for these kinds of attacks.

The Cold Hard Facts

  • Ransomware is on the rise: These attacks aren’t going away. In fact, they’re getting more frequent and more damaging.
  • ?2FA/MFA blocks 99% of attacks: According to security experts, enabling 2FA/MFA can stop 99% of cyber threats before they cause harm.
  • ?Your reputation is at stake: A single breach can cost you not only money but also the trust of your customers and partners.

What You Need to Do—Today

  1. Enable 2FA/MFA Across the Board: Don’t leave any account unprotected. Ensure that every single user in your organization is required to use 2FA/MFA.
  2. Stay Informed: Regularly update your knowledge on emerging threats like the one targeting Google Chrome users. The more you know, the better you can protect your business.
  3. Audit and Monitor: Implement regular checks to ensure 2FA/MFA is active across all accounts. This isn’t a one-and-done task—constant vigilance is key.

Final Thoughts

The reality is, you can’t afford to ignore the growing threat landscape. As the Forbes article highlights, "Cybersecurity isn’t just an IT issue anymore—it’s a critical component of business strategy." By taking action now, you can protect your business from the next big attack and ensure your operations continue without disruption.

Remember, not taking this seriously could mean the difference between thriving and barely surviving. Don’t let your business become the next headline—secure it today.
