343 Industries Rebrands as 'Halo Studios' and Adopts Unreal Engine 5 for Future Titles

In a significant development for one of gaming’s most beloved franchises, 343 Industries, the studio behind the Halo series, has officially rebranded itself as Halo Studios. This shift comes alongside an even bigger announcement that future Halo titles will be built using Unreal Engine 5, a move that is poised to reshape the look, feel, and gameplay of the franchise.

Since its inception, Halo has been synonymous with innovation in the first-person shooter (FPS) genre. The franchise originally burst onto the scene with Bungie at the helm, revolutionising console FPS games with tight controls, iconic multiplayer, and a sweeping narrative centred around the Master Chief. After Bungie’s departure, 343 Industries took over, delivering titles such as Halo 4, Halo 5: Guardians, and Halo Infinite.

Now, with the rebranding to Halo Studios, the company signals its renewed dedication to focusing solely on the Halo franchise.

The decision to adopt Unreal Engine 5 will undoubtedly have a wide range of implications for the Halo franchise. For fans, it raises the question of how the series will maintain its signature feel while transitioning to a new engine. The Halo games are known for their unique blend of fluid combat, expansive sandbox levels, and distinct aesthetic. With the shift, the studio will need to carefully balance maintaining what makes Halo Halo, while leveraging the benefits of Unreal Engine’s technical prowess.

Though the road ahead is still unfolding, these decisions show that the developers are committed to evolving Halo to meet the ever-changing landscape of the gaming industry.

What are your thoughts? Do you like the direction Halo and 343 is heading?

All alarm bells are ringing even this early in the production phase. Halo Infinite didn’t fail because of the engine. At release, the game was only about 70% complete, had a questionable art direction, and was missing half of the multiplayer features that even Halo 2 had (like couch co-op). Most importantly, it simply wasn’t fun. Interviews in "A New Dawn | Halo Studios" show that the core issues weren’t understood at all. Jaime Griesemer, one of the OGl creators of Halo: Combat Evolved, nailed it in an interview: "The game needs to be fun before it's pretty." Until 343 Industries (Halo Studios) understands and applies the "30 seconds of fun" gameplay loop, which made Halo unforgettable for so many, I see no future for this franchise. The engine isn’t the problem... the game is.

As a longtime Halo lover and super fan, the rebrand makes me feel optimistic. Having been the first Make-A-Wish kid and an honorary team member for 343 Industries, this rebrand makes me sad as my impact on the Halo franchise no longer seems important to the 'modern era'. Like the name 343 Industries, my amazing trip to 343 is a footnote in a largely forgotten history. The bad rep was uncalled for in a lot of ways because 343 gave us one of the most beloved entries in the franchise with Halo: Reach. The reason that the Halo community feels like the previous entries have been uninspired isn't because of the studio name, but because the games have distinctly been marketing to gaming trends instead of being what Halo has been from the beginning. Split-screen Co-op was what Halo was from the beginning. The gaming market doesn't need another MLG Destiny, PUBG, or Fortnite lookalike. If this new generation of Halo can give us what we know and love of Halo, fans will be satisfied. If this new generation of Halo can give us what we hope for in Halo, fans will be pleased. If this new generation of Halo can give us a worthwhile campaign that thematically feels and plays as Halo, fans will be overjoyed. [1/2]

I find it really strange that a large majority of gamers have called out how bad 343 has been as a studio and how bad its titles have been. The outcry has led to many saying that 343 should be removed from rhe drivers seat by microsoft and a different studio should come in. This rebrand makes me very nervous as it seems more like a publicity stunt to save face, then a genuine attempt to improve the state of things for the games and who are playing them. I feel very certain that the push to UE5 is more for the new lighting engine in 5.5 and the mesh rendering engine, which is very robust, and not to fix gameplay, navigation, and stability problems that exist with titles like infinite and MCC.
