#34 To all the Gig workers in Karnataka!

The Karnataka government has proposed a new bill aimed at improving the welfare of gig workers who are employed by apps and platforms like ride-sharing services, food delivery, and online marketplaces. This draft bill ensures several rights for gig workers, including a safe work environment that complies with occupational health and safety standards. It also requires gig workers to register with the state to access specific social security schemes.

One of the key provisions is the requirement for platforms to be transparent about their algorithms. Platforms must inform gig workers about how work is allocated, how they are rated, categorized, and how their personal data is processed. The bill also establishes comprehensive dispute resolution processes, including internal dispute resolution committees, arbitration, and litigation under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

Additionally, the bill proposes the creation of a Gig Workers Welfare Board and a Gig Workers’ Fund to further support these workers. For platforms that violate these norms, fines will range from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh. The services covered by this bill include ride-sharing, food and grocery delivery, logistics, e-marketplaces, professional services (such as beauty services), healthcare, travel and hospitality, and content and media services.

The draft bill is open for feedback until July 10, 2024. To share your response, you can send us the keyword "Gig" on the link here.
