After a steady increase over the past 60 years, the United States has recently experienced a decrease in life expectancy for two years in a row. A 2021 report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlighted a significant pattern in life expectancy between Black and White Americans: an already substantial gap of 3.6 years in 2017 has increased to 5.6 years as of 2020. Addressing the underlying issues causing these inequities among Black Americans can help improve the lives of 3.3 million Americans across all races. The following infographic shares context for the Black American life expectancy gap, the factors that contribute to it, and actions that could begin to close it.
