Don't Make These Digital Marketing Mistakes!

Marketing is risky.

You never know the results.

Even if you are 100 percent sure of a campaign's success, it may still fail.

But what I’ve learned can help you avoid failures in marketing.

1. Heavily Relying on a Single Channel

This is one of the biggest mistakes: relying on a single channel of marketing.

It's like putting all your eggs in one basket.

For example, if you have gained top ranking in a search engine and receive most leads from organic search, you might stop doing everything else and just stick with SEO.

You never know when Google will drop your ranking, and your business will be shattered.

The risk is high.

Have a multi-channel marketing strategy that includes both paid and organic channels.

It keeps your risk low.

2. Deciding Too Early on Results

It takes time to build awareness and drive customer behavior towards your products and services.

When you start any campaign, you often see minimal to no results.

But don't decide too early. Keep going with your campaigns or marketing activities.

However, keep learning and optimize your efforts.

It's more like a compounding effect. Initially, you don't see results, but when it starts to grow, it can grow tenfold.

So have patience before you decide to end the campaign.

3. Copying Competitors

I never copy competitors.

I observe them, learn from them, and create my own strategies.

Apparently, when you see your competitors' marketing materials on the web, you think you are missing out.

But you never know if this particular marketing tactic is actually working. You might just copy and fail too.

The other issue is, if you copy competitors, it means your competitor will always stay ahead of you and you’ll just follow.

It won't build your brand or help your ideal customer understand your value proposition.

Keep understanding your customer behavior and create your own marketing strategies that resonate with your customers.

And yes, you can always look at competitors to learn from them, but copying them is not a good idea.

4. Focusing on Vanity Metrics

I have worked with many CEOs.

They are too focused on vanity metrics, such as the number of impressions, social media followers, etc.

Because they don't know the metrics they should focus on—the real catalysts of end results.

Define the real metrics such as conversion rate, engagement, open rates, customer lifetime value, etc., and stay focused on improving them.

5. Creating Wrong Campaign Goals

I have come a long way to understand this and have helped my clients understand this too.

Aligning the right goal with the right campaign is crucial.

You cannot drive more leads with a branding campaign.

You cannot drive more engagement with a lead generation campaign.

Aligning the right goal with the right campaign and the right channel is crucial.

Otherwise, it turns out to be a mere disappointment.
