31 Days Sober: My Journey So Far

I’m 31 days sober, and I wanted to share a bit about my experience so far.

Let me start by saying that I come from a generation where heavy drinking was the norm.

My university rowing club was even sponsored by five bars in the city and we had to drink at everyone every Wednesday contractually ;).

Blue WKD and cider in the park were pretty much staples of a 16,17,18 year old me.

So, why did I decide to go sober for a month?

Well, now that I’m in my 30s, hangovers have become more like all-day events.

I wanted to challenge myself and see what this "sober curious" trend is all about.

The obvious perks?

No hangovers,

No hangxiety,

And a much happier bank balance.

But here’s what surprised me: I feel less sluggish overall, my sleep has improved, and I’m recovering better after workouts.

Do I miss drinking?

Occasionally, yes.

Has it been a life-changing experience?

Not quite yet.

But I’m sticking with it because I’m currently doing the 75 Hard challenge, which includes a no-alcohol rule for 75 days. By the end of it, I’ll be over 100 days sober.

I’ll update you on how it goes, but for now, I’m enjoying the clarity and focus that comes with being sober.

Curious to hear your thoughts—have any of you tried going sober, even for a short time? Let me know!

Cheers to new challenges and fresh perspectives.

Always loved a drink. I associated it with reward. Over time it started to deeply affect my mental health, my mood and my behaviour. Which then impacted my relationships, very negatively. I’m not abstinent completely but I very rarely drink these days. The biggest benefit for me is a more stable moods. I miss the highs but not the lows.

Great effort. 19 Months off the booze for me, mine was a dry January that got out of hand! 100 days is a perfect milestone, the difference you'll see in quality of sleep, concentration, energy in the mornings really hits home at that point (way more than 31 days) I think a great way to look at it isn't as "giving something up" but what you "can do instead"... I signed up for my first half marathon after a month off (not a runner!) and really enjoyed the hangover free weekends to get out early and run distances I've never covered before. (It was either that or Ben and Jerry's which very nearly won!) Good luck on the 100!

Nice work Lewis. 274 days sober over here. Purely because I was approaching 50, so for health reasons I switched it to my local gym instead. No massive difference other than a slight increase in clarity and the obvious lack of morning brain fog. I'm looking forward to (one) glass of red with you after 75 hard. Gotta get the Resveretrol into the diet! Stay Hard (75 Hard)
