30 Years in Tech
This year marks three decades as a professional in the field of data & analytics, which seems a valid reason to reflect on all the silliness I’ve seen during these years and whether things have improved since the start of my career (spoiler: not necessarily). Over the coming months I'll publish several blogs in the "30 years in tech" series on Medium which are hopefully of any use to fellow practitioners in the wonderful world of data. First post is aptly titled My First 'Data Warehouse'. Enjoy!

4 年1991 :-) Mooi jaar om te starten en wat een leuk idee om daar eens op terug te kijken. Het is volgens mij vooral in die eerste 10 jaar geweest dat wij elkaar tegen het lijf liepen. Pfff tijd vliegt voorbij.

4 年Jos - It was great to read your post - it took me back to about the same period in time with a University executive information office job. We used SPSSx, flat file extracts from fourteen different 'student' applications, and Excel spreadsheets. The net result, while reliant on a fairly manual set of steps, was - like yours- also very valuable to the decision-makers. Our office was the first in Western Canada to do achieve longitudinal activity-based costing for students from application to graduation. The key to getting all of this information raked into one pile, as my colleagues described it, was a non-technical 'aha' using a single seat in a class as the "subject of interest". Using that single unit we were able to say Who sat in it; Where they were from; When it was occupied (or not); What overhead costs to assign; What direct (instructional) costs to assign; and, How to reduce costs and increase revenue. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
