Horticultural Business Consultant Celebrates 30 Successful Years

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Horticultural Business Consultant Neville Stein is celebrating thirty years of helping plant nurseries, garden centres and landscapers to achieve their goals, and says he has no plans to retire any time soon!

?

Neville was recently voted the UK’s most influential person in horticulture, and for good reason. Through his teaching, coaching and mentoring services, he has helped many a business to achieve their goals for profitability, growth, and even successful exit strategies. He is known throughout the industry for his calm, logical approach to problem solving, and for his energy, warmth, and enthusiasm.

?

Before taking the leap into self-employment back in 1994, Neville completed a Diploma in Nursery Practices at Pershore College of Horticulture. He then held a variety of positions in the nursery stock industry, including Sales Manager for Notcutts Nurseries - at the time the UK’s largest plant production nursery.

?

Added to his invaluable industry experience, Neville has extensive academic qualifications, including an MBA in Business Administration, a post-graduate Diploma in Management, and a post graduate Certificate in Management. He feels it is the combination of his industry experience and his academic knowledge that enables his consultancy to be tailored so specifically to the horticultural sector, and bespoke to individual businesses within. He believes it is not enough to understand horticulture or business, a consultant must understand and be experienced in both.? ?

?

Neville’s skills and experience has led to a past appointment to the horticultural board of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), and to his tutoring on both The Kew Diploma and The Institute of Leadership and Management. He is an assessor on the RHS MHort Programme, and also teaches key management subjects at Longwood Gardens, Pennsylvania. He is also a regular contributor to Horticulture Week.

?

Neville is also active within the charity sector. He views his roles as a trustee of the Colegrave Seabrook Foundation, and as a committee member for the charity Perennial, as “giving back”. Neville’s podcast, Cultivate Your Future, aims to encourage new entrants into our industry by examining the many career paths open to those interested in working with plants.

?

When asked about the secret of his success, Neville rather modestly said “Having almost half a century of experience in the horticultural industry, including working directly with plants and people on the shop floor, I can empathise with business owners, managers, employees and customers. I have studied the theories behind good business practice, but I’ve also learned a lot from my 47 years in the industry. Because no two organisations are the same in terms of their goals, their challenges and the personalities within their teams, I bend like a willow tree, and adapt my methods to the client’s specific needs. I gain a lot of pleasure and satisfaction from helping organisations to succeed and from watching individuals within those organisations gain skills that will help them throughout their entire lives. This job is not about me - it’s about helping UK horticulture to grow and thrive”

?

Renowned landscaping guru, Alan Sargent, says of Neville Stein “Neville is a walking mine of common sense which he dispenses with modest charm”, and after thirty years of honing such a busy and successful career, one would think that Neville would be considering retirement. But far from it! This enthusiastic and energetic 63 year old is planning to keep on working and contributing to the industry he loves.

Well that is quite something. I had no idea! Congratulations and it’s a pleasure to be an acquaintance , as it was even before I knew all this. Look forward to our next catch up.
