Most people are afraid of doing video on social media. I used to be one of those people. The way that I got better at video is by JUST DOING IT. I learned that the best way to do anything is with accountability and with a group of other people within a structure and for a limited period of time.
I recently watched a TED talk with Matt Cutts where he talks about being able to do anything for 30 days. He said that when he tried to do new things for 30 days, it helped him be more creative and he actually felt more alive.
Doing video does not have to be a chore, it can be FUN! Lets jump in together and make it easier with some guidelines.
Why do LinkedIn Video?
Video will help you connect with your audience, brand yourself better and help you practice being better at public speaking in general. Especially when someone wants to interview you for their own social media page.
LinkedIn has been prioritizing video over other content for some time now and when people see the video, they get connected with you on a much deeper level.
Lets make our video TODAY. Do not put this off. Pull out your phone and get started!
First step to making sure you FINISH strong is to commit to doing it publicly and create a post about it with a video. Let everyone know that you are doing 30 days of video as part of the #SocialSellinVideo30 challenge on LinkedIn.
The video does not need to be long, it can be under a minute. I do recommend you decide what your plan is in advance so that you stick to it and do not hit a brick wall and give up.
You might feel rather creative ONE day and you might want to knock out 10 videos at once, that is perfectly fine. You would benefit from stock piling them in case you need extra videos for days that you just do not get to it.
Try to post the video at the same time each day, the best time to post is 8:30am on weekdays and at 10pm at night on weekends.
Number each video, so people can track and see what video you are up to. You can even write a LinkedIn article where you list out your plan, kind of like this one. You can edit the article each day and add the link to your latest video. Write up the post there and copy to share it. That is what I will be doing and I will add the link to the article here.
Next, make a list of questions that you will answer in advance, categories that you will cover and decide on how you will start and end each video. You can be as creative or as boring as you want. It's up to you. This is a fun challenge and there is no wrong way to do this. Here are some ideas for videos that you can publish.
- Selfie videos with your phone (Most popular) Decide if the video with be WhatsApp and Insta story friendly which means they are long or YouTube friendly which means they are wide. Does not matter which one you do, just do it. My #15secondmojovation videos are insta story friendly and my RAW #mojovation videos are YouTube friendly. Get it?
- Webcam with Zoom recording. You can use your desktop or laptop to create a video using Zoom and your webcam, and just record it quickly on your computer. It's really easy to do and it saves right on your computer so you can share it.
- Screen recording videos. You can use a tool like screencastify, screencastomatic or loom to create a video with what you are doing on your screen, you can even have yourself in the video as well as you use your computer if you are giving tips.
- Slideshows of photos that you took that are inspiring. If you do not want to share your voice or face, you can share video slideshows with music and words. It's pretty easy to create with Google Photos or slideshow tools in your phone. Just search slideshow in the Google App store.
- Videos from other sources online. You can save videos you find online that are viral and share one a day for 30 days. This would be a last resort if you REALLY do not want to share yourself but want to share videos. At least you will be sharing content that resonates with you.
Here are some categories of content that you can produce:
- Tips about things that you are interested in. You do not need to be an expert to give tips. People love tips.. This does not need to be about your business but it can.
- Things that you find interesting in this world. You might observe something that gets people thinking. Finish off with asking people their opinion.
- A question that you have for people to ponder or ask themselves, you can even engage with people to answer in the comments.
- Religion or Politics, I generally tell people to stay away from this but if this is your game, use it and enjoy it. You will create some controversy - people are super crazy about this stuff.
- News that interests you. You might find things in the news that pique your interest and you may want to share what you found with the world. You can also share TRENDS in your industry or in general.
- Facts and statistics are always interesting. You can share one interesting stat each day and what it makes you think about.
- Jokes and humor are always fun. You can crack a joke even if it's corny and share it with the world. It can be a riddle like a knock knock joke that resonates with you or it can be something related to what you do.
- Vlog style talk about your day. Believe it or not, people are actually interested in what you are up to each day. You can share what you plan on doing today or what you did yesterday. This can be super interesting even if you did nothing special.
- Share insights from a book you read, or a book you want to read or a book you heard about and give us a one minute overview of your thoughts. I have read hundreds of books and I can talk endlessly about the ones I love.
- Share stories of your life. There is no limit to how many stories you can share about things that happened to you, about forks in the road, hard decisions you had to make, people in your life that were good to you or wronged you, the good the bad and the ugly. You can include a lesson with each story.
- Share a daily quote, which resonates with you. You can literally read a quote out loud and tell people what it means to you and why it makes you tingle. Ask them to share their quote of the day.
- Daily reminder for something people can do that day to have a better life. Simple reminders like remember to smile or drink water, they are super helpful.
Do not over think it, just decide what you plan on doing, and just do it.
You can change up your plan as you go and as you get inspired by the videos of other people.
Once you publish your first video, leave it as a comment to this article so anyone doing the 30 day challenge can see it. LET’S DO THIS TOGETHER!

LinkedIn Video Social Sellin - Questions and Answers:
Question: Joe, can you share an opening for the FIRST VIDEO script for my video so I understand how to do the first one?
Answer: Yes, here is what you can modify remember to make it your own. ( Social Sellin Video Challenge #1 ) Welcome To the 30 day Challenge with Joe Apfelbaum, Excited to be getting started today. I am committing to do 30 videos for the next 30 days and I hope you join along with me. If you want to hold me accountable to do these videos, please let me know in the comments, so I know who will be supporting me. Let's start! BOOM
Question: When you say, start the videos and end the videos the same way, can you give an example?
Answer: Yes, in my 15 second mojovation videos I say, “This is Joe Apfelbaum with another 15 seconds of Mojovation” then I end with “BOOM” - In my GrowTime.TV videos I say “Welcome to GrowTime where we talk about business, marketing and technology, so you can grow from average Joe to CEO.” and I end with “We will be back next week with some more amazing tips” or some variation of that.
Question: What hashtag should I use on my videos when I post them on LinkedIn?
Answer: Use the Hashtag #SocialSellinVideo30 so we can all can track your progress each day. You can also add your own hashtag so you can see all of your own 30 videos in one place later.
Question: What should I make my videos about?
Answer: My recommendation is you should mix it up. Keep it simple and do not overthink it. Start with a few tips about your expertise, move on to a few stories or case studies, then share some shocking stats and even ask some challenging questions that people can ponder.
Question: How long should my video be?
Answer: If you are just getting started, I would keep the video to about a minute or less. Otherwise it will be very overwhelming to do 30 long videos. If you have lots of experience you can make 3 minute videos. If you already have an established community you can make long form videos that people will watch because they love you. Many of my videos are 9 minutes long with no captions! When I started out, I was doing really short videos. People take 20 seconds to decide if they should trust you and usually if it's a long drawn out video they will leave.
Send me your questions and I will answer them here.. BOOM!
Good luck with the 30 day video challenge!
