30 AAPI Startup Leaders Building the Innovation Ecosystem

As we sunset Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, I value pausing to be aware, to recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions and achievements of AAPI entrepreneurs, investors, and ecosystem builders in our innovation ecosystem. I combed my network and asked trusted leaders for their nominations, so I LOVE reading about so many people's journeys, albeit an emerging leader or a local San Diego leader, regional leader or global leader. I celebrate you!

AAPI innovators have contributed to technology, education, science, healthcare, life sciences, and design in a multitude of ways, impacting the way we all live. AAPI investors have funded the innovations they want to see in the world, impacting our economy locally, nationally, and globally. AAPI ecosystem builders support and advocate for founders & funders & all stakeholders in between to build thriving communities albeit locally with their accelerators and programs of choice or raising voices for AAPI communities for racial equity. Thank you to all of these groups of servant leaders for stepping into their strengths and being shining lights for innovation and impact in their communities.

AAPI leaders are beacons of light and hope in their startup ecosystems because they bring:

  1. Diversity and Representation: AAPI startup leaders bring diverse perspectives, lived experiences, and cultural backgrounds to the ecosystem; enriching depth of impact. Their presence helps promote inclusivity and representation, making the startup landscape more reflective of the diverse society we live in.
  2. Innovation and Creativity: Bringing their unique insights and ideas to the table, AAPI startup leaders foster innovation through leverage their cultural heritage, technological expertise, and business acumen to develop impactful products that cater to diverse global markets.
  3. Entrepreneurial Success Stories: The AAPI startup leaders achieving success have a deep sense of responsibility for their communities, serving as role models and inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs. Their stories showcase the possibilities of the entrepreneurial journey, the path less traveled by many, thus encouraging others to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions.
  4. Job Creation and Economic Growth: AAPI-led startups contribute to job creation by hiring diverse talent from all walks of life. These ventures often create employment opportunities not only for AAPI individuals but also for individuals from different backgrounds, contributing to a more inclusive and thriving economy.
  5. Mentorship and Support: Actively engaging in mentorship and support initiatives within the ecosystem, AAPI startup leaders share their knowledge, experiences, and networks to help other entrepreneurs navigate the challenges of starting and scaling their startups.
  6. Community Building: Leaders of leaders, AAPI startup enthusiasts organize events, workshops, and networking opportunities that bring together like-minded individuals, enabling collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the formation of valuable partnerships.
  7. Philanthropy and Social Impact: Many AAPI startup leaders actively engage in philanthropic efforts and social impact initiatives. They use their resources and influence to address societal challenges and support charitable causes.

Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month by highlighting just a few of the AAPI inventors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who are making significant contributions and impact on their communities. I started with only 5 in each category and I just couldn't help myself and did 10 leaders & emerging leaders in my local, national, and global innovation ecosystem. They are all servant leaders at heart, changing the world one innovation at a time, one entrepreneur their invest in, or communities they build.

30 AAPI startup leaders

Let's celebrate #aapiheritagemonth not only in May but all year round. I am a strong ally, my children are half Asian, I married a Chinexican, and we have experienced our own challenges as a mixed-race & ethnic family. Living and experiencing (in) community, loving diversity of thought and lived experiences is KEY to making our innovation ecosystem more exceptional. I will always continue speaking up and speaking out for underrepresented communities. These 30 innovation ecosystem LEADERS should be honored, respected, and championed. What you can do?

  1. Invest in the entrepreneurs to launch or scale their startups
  2. Assist the ecosystem builders by mentoring in their programs
  3. Co-invest with the investors (become an LP, join the angel network, co-invest as individual investors
