3 (yes, more) things I learned about AI

  1. By some measures, AI is already more creative than humans. The Alternative Uses Test (AUT), which asks participants to generate multiple uses for everyday objects like toothbrushes within two minutes, shows AI outperforming most humans in divergent thinking. Similarly, AI excels at the Remote Associates Test (RAT), where participants must find connecting words between seemingly unrelated terms (like "pine," "crab," and "sauce" connecting to "apple"). These standardized measures of creativity suggest that AI may have already surpassed human performance in certain aspects of creative thinking.
  2. College professors are among the professionals most likely to be impacted by AI capabilities. Economists found that AI's strengths align most closely with highly compensated, creative, and educated work, with college professors dominating the top 20 list of jobs most susceptible to AI disruption. This is interesting and a little surprising to me as it challenges the common assumption that AI primarily threatens routine or lower-skilled jobs. Instead, AI appears particularly good at work requiring complex analysis, content creation, and knowledge synthesis—core components of academic work. Perhaps the impact of AI on teaching and learning is both disruptive and positive.
  3. There are two distinct approaches to human-AI collaboration: Cyborg and Centaur models. In Centaur work, according to Ethan Mollick and others, humans and AI have clearly separated roles, while Cyborg work features more integrated collaboration between human and machine. As AI capabilities continue to evolve, these collaborative approaches will likely shift, with individuals developing their own preferences based on personal factors and specific task requirements.

What a thought-provoking combo! It's fascinating to think about the future of learning with such unique perspectives. How do you see these ideas impacting education?

I’m most intrigued by how some of those college professors are responding. The ones Mollick mentions seem to see “disruption” as being synonymous with “opportunity.”

I’m a believer in the sentiment that AI will not take workers jobs but allow them to do their jobs more effectively. Thank you for sharing.
