3 Wine Drops | Winery... Incubators?

1. Winery Incubators - Growing the Winemakers of Tomorrow

Starting a successful business is hard work! Young and seasoned entrepreneurs alike are well aware of the considerable challenges and costs of a wine start-up. Lack of funds is one of the driving factors behind most start-ups' downfall, with a 37% reported reason for failure (wilburlabs polls). Market fluctuations and global instability can impact a project well before it’s stable enough to survive circumstances and competition.

This is all the more true when it comes to the wine industry: the opening costs for a winery can be exceptionally high, estimated in a range between $50,000 to $250,000 (Winery Mavericks). For most investors, this means jeopardizing the entirety of their life savings in a risky project with no certain return.

Winery incubators are a relatively new concept that is rapidly gaining traction and attention within the wine industry. These types of incubators can be a new driving force, providing expertise, mentorship, marketing channels and in some cases equipment and production spaces to young and ambitious winemakers.?

Most winery incubators experiments are located in the USA, in winemaking states such as California, Kansas and Washington. There are a few notable examples in the rest of the world, such as Teliani Valley in Georgia, which is helping small winemakers bottle and export their own wines under the Teliani Collection label.

Wine incubators are not just helpful in reducing the burdensome costs required when opening a winery. They can also be exciting and dynamic spaces for growth and learning and they can promote a sense of community and support for new winemakers.?

Despite some expected challenges, winery incubators can prove a powerful chance for growth and renewal in the wine industry. They could provide the essential opportunity to train and teach the wine professionals of tomorrow and bring fresh air to a new generation of young and ambitious winemakers.

"This winter I spent greater time than usual with red wines and pizza, one of the best joints you can have - in my humble opinion. I went with some friends to this little Italian restaurant in Baixa Chiado, Lisbon agitated region. The classic Neapolitan pizza kept me mouthwatering from start to finish, but the outstanding was the red Douro Reserva from Pacheca Group , 2020. I guess I always fall for Touriga Nacional wines, but this one was a great bottle for the night."
