I’ve got 16 people on my sales team right now banging on the phones, making cold calls to companies in order to pitch a sales training product that many have never heard of before. It’s a tough gig and only some people are able to succeed at it. Most of my salespeople have come from out of state, moving across the country on their own dime to have the opportunity to work in my office.
What do I do in my company that creates that magnetic pull into our company where we attract people?
There’s a lot of things that we do in our office that are unique and that contribute to how much success we have and how much we get out of our team, but I want to share with you 3 things that really stand out more than anything else.
#1 Action Over Planning
Just make the decision and then figure it out. On Jarrod Glandt's first day in my office back in 2009 I saw him trying to make a list... "Boy, I'm not paying you to build a list. Pick up the phone and make a call." Now he's a millionaire and my VP of sales.
We don't get caught up in details of planning, we make a decision and we move on it. And that doesn't mean we have to know everything that happens along the way. We have to have clarity on what goal we're trying to hit, and then we just start making progress every single day.
A lot of people get bogged down in mechanics and details, and it ends up preventing them from moving forward.
When we announced the 10X Growth Conference for 2018, we didn't have a venue, we didn't have speakers, we didn't have a date. We just said, "We’re going to do another event," and we announced it during the 2017 event! We do not add time to decisions. You have to decide to live with the consequences of either taking action or not taking action. There are consequences either way.
Sometimes consequences can mean a little bit of confusion, a little bit of chaos, a little bit of disorganization. Sometimes it can mean tough phone calls or hard problems, but the consequence of no action is nothing gets done. I'm willing to live with the consequences of action every single time over the consequences of no action.
#2 Big Targets
Everything has a target. Book sales, phone calls, demos, everything that we do has a target. When we came up with 10X Growth Conference, the first action we took was the target. We don't talk about how we're going to market it, how we're going to advertise it, who we're going to try to get to the conference, where it's going to be. We don't do anything else but make a big target.
Then we push on those targets hard. No matter what, never ever, ever do we ever lower the target. We actually increase the responsibility to make sure that we hit the target. So when we set a target for ticket sales, and we realize that the clock is running out, it isn't, "Hey, Jarrod, you think we got a little overambitious on the target?" That's not the conversation I have with my VP of sales, or anyone else at my office.
If something's not working for us, we rework things.
This makes us nimble because we're always trying to hit the target, and we push, and we insist, and we inspect that the target gets hit. We have staff meetings every morning just so we can cover our targets, and that requires that we have somebody that's leading from the front and really driving everything towards the target.
The truth is you’ve got to be ruthless with the targets. We make sure that people know that there are targets and there are consequences for not hitting them. Have rewards and penalties. This means I reward for hitting targets and penalize for not hitting targets.
#3 Assume Responsibility
We have high levels of responsibility in our office. It can be a little humorous actually because whenever something goes wrong, everybody wants to accept responsibility for the problem, "It was my fault." "No, no, it was my fault, my bad. I'll do better next time, my fault, my fault." It’s a good problem to have.
You can't control the things that you refuse to accept responsibility for. If you can't accept responsibility for it, you become the effect. You become the effect of something else, and we just refuse for that to happen in our business.
We refuse to be the effect of something happening to us.
My business was torn up in 2008 and 2009, people weren't going to seminars, they're not sending their people to workshops, they don't have money for travel. I assumed responsibility for the situation, changed directions, and moved the business online. If promotion on X new product launch isn't working, assume responsibility and re--direct.
We had a situation with a product that we launched, and we went through a social shutdown. There was quite a bit of chaos in the office. Google was threatening to basically pull us off from all their AdWords, Facebook was saying, "We will close your account down," because of some wording—it said, "Millionaire." They're really protective of people advertising the fact that you can become a millionaire, I don't know if you guys know that or not.
I found out this has happened because there's a lot of scam artists out there, people that don't have good products and they take advantage of people—get rich quick schemes. My web team was like, "Oh no, we're not going be able to advertise on Google anymore. They're going to shut down our Facebook page. What are we going to do?" And I walked in and said, "We don't need any of them. I'm going to accept responsibility for the situation and we're going figure out a way around this." And we did.
Action over planning, big targets, and assuming responsibility are 3 big ways my office stays productive—and I promise you if you implement these things in your organization you too will have more success. These are the things that we implement in our business to make sure that the 10X thing continues to flow and perpetuate in the organization.
It's really important that if you want to create the right vehicle, or if you want to find the right vehicle, that you look for these 3 things. They're indicators that you can use to decide if you're in the right place. People waste time, energy, and effort in the wrong place because it doesn't have the rocket fuel to get them where they want to go.
I want my company to be a rocket ship.
If you’re saying, "Hey, am I in the right vehicle?" Well, if you don't have a workplace filled with people taking responsibility for hitting big targets and taking action, you're not.
If you spend half your time in meetings planning this and that, you're not in the right vehicle.
There’s no better place to meet those in the right vehicles than coming with me and my friends to St. Bart's next month. There's also no better place to make your vehicle 10X than committing to this exclusive trip. I'm looking for just a select few more individuals to join. Learn more here.
Be great,

7 年Good article. Action is absolutely paramount to success. However, failing to plan would have put many more businesses out of businesses than what you're contemplating here.
