The 3 Ways of Scaling Sustainable Agriculture!

The 3 Ways of Scaling Sustainable Agriculture!

We all know what sustainable agriculture is, to just briefly explain to you all - it's the kind of practice of growing fresh produce to meet today’s needs without compromising the quality of future needs.

Amidst Cop 28, there has been wide encouragement for sustainable farming practices on a global level. The world leaders committed to the protocols read and promised to make a resilient food system - including the African government. So before we see what the Cop 28 ambitions are, let’s reflect on the challenges this very innovative industry faces.

Financial Scalability Challenges

Sustainable agriculture is a novel concept and along with this, comes a lot of trust issues. So farmers don’t adopt this practice 0- especially the smallholder farmers in Africa because they are unsure of the returns. They fear the initial investment cost and change in farming techniques.

Lack of Access to the Mainstream Market

Sustainable products need customers’ tastes and preferences adoption which is fairly a tough task. The products might reach the markets but not on the plate. Here, the toughest decision lies in the alteration of consumers’ behaviour and awareness.

Shortage of Policies

Policies defining the clear objectives of sustainable agriculture are a must which until a few years back in Africa, failed to have one.

Now what is the way forward?

Capacity Building, Infrastructure & Innovations in Agriculture

Cop 28 is committed to the generous allocation of sustainable agriculture of funds with effective aid to farmers by helping them adopt this new mode of resilient farming.

Integrated Water Management System

Sustainable water management practices at all levels in both developed & developing countries will ensure there is sufficient water with zero wastage.

Climatic Environmental Benefits

Cop 28 is very enthusiastic about conserving, protecting & restoring land and natural ecosystems. This will help in promoting biodiversity, enhancing soil health & transitioning to more sustainable production in future.

PS: This is not just limited to the 3 points discussed. The entire focus is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing adverse impacts & promoting sustainable practices which is the need of the hour.

An area that needs urgent attention and innovation to aid Sustainable Agriculture is replenishing depleted soil nutrients. In most of the developing countries, this factor has caused decrease in production and forced many to engage in practices that are not sustainable. Northern Nigeria that has been the hub for agriculture in the country is facing serious treath from desert encroachment, insecurity, depleted agricultural lands and population from plastic waste. Innovations that will lead to replenishment of these depleted soils through recycling will increase productivity and enhance sustainability of agricultural lands.

Sustainable agriculture must be sustainable for the farmer. Input intensive agriculture creates a dependency on products where costs trend upwards and soil quality declines. What is sustainable is to allow nature to do what it does for FREE. https://www.metabolic.nl/news/regenerative-agriculture-farming-in-natures-form/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoPOwBhAeEiwAJuXRhw-ru5Az_NHVX4aj7avjp48MPWWmFaGhEZfgOmEgrm4E3tXM8aOiRhoCGB0QAvD_BwE
