3 Ways to Promote & Support Autism Acceptance

Did you know that April is Autism Acceptance Month? The recognition aims to promote acceptance and celebrate the condition that, according to the 2020 United State census, affects one in every 54 children. The complex developmental condition alters an individual’s ability to interact, communicate and progress.

Throughout April, we will emphasize inclusive communities for those with autism and spread awareness to further educate our peers.

Here are three ways you can promote and support autism acceptance:

1. Learn About Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

People who live with autism manage different components of the behavioral disorder compared to others. Take time to educate yourself on those living with autism by conducting online research or reading books like “How to Think Smarter About People who Think Differently” by Steve Silberman and “Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew” by Ellen Notbohm. Knowledge is power, and the more you know, the better you will understand.

2. Spread Positivity

After expanding your knowledge, it is time to inform others. Promote the month’s recognition on social media by highlighting a local program such as Transitions or hosting a sensory-friendly event like the upcoming Easter Bunny Meet and Greet at Mohawk Chevrolet. You can also encourage others to join you by participating in events that spread positivity.

3. Be Inclusive

Finally, ensure access for everyone. The most important concept about inclusion is that it recognizes and honors the fundamental value of all individuals.

At Transitions, we provide support to teens and young adults with autism and other learning differences with an evidence-based program that trains students by providing lifelong skills to live independently and succeed academically and professionally. To learn more, visit?transitionsusa.org.?
