3 ways Netflix is changing the world

3 ways Netflix is changing the world

Yeah you like to stream Netflix. But did you know that Netflix is changing the world and the way you see it, one show at a time? Here's how.

Netflix makes you feel a little less alone

I can't tell you how many times people have told me that they keep Friends (or any other feel-good show) playing in the background. It's just comforting to have familiar voices endlessly streaming in your living room. It helps you feel a little less alone in this cold harsh world. During quarantine, Netflix not only helped millions battle boredom, it provided a much-needed sense of familiarity in a highly unpredictable world. Were you anxious during lockdown? Imagine how anxious you would have been without your favorite bingewatching platform. Now that's a scary thought!

Netflix brings you closer to your loved ones

The next time you're sitting with friends, I want you to notice what happens when someone brings up a show they're currently obsessed with. Slowly but surely, people start chiming in with their opinions and recommendations. It's fascinating to watch their contrasting perspectives and how protective they are of their favorite shows. Most importantly, it's a bonding experience, particularly when two people discover they're obsessed with the same show. Suddenly, you have something to talk about with somebody you've never met before. It's glorious!

Couples also benefit from bingewatching. My wife and I have our own separate TV interests (I love Ozark, she loves How To Get Away With Murder), but there are a handful of shows (Dead To Me, You, When They See Us) we would not dare watch without the other. It becomes a sacred experience – we analyze, we dissect, we obsess, and then we do it all over again. There's nothing better than a little bingebonding.

Netflix opens you up to new cultures

Foreign shows have taken the streaming world by storm over the past two years. Thanks to Netflix, viewers are taking the plunge and obsessing over series that aren't in their native language and discovering whole new worlds as a result. I personally can't wait to visit Turkey's beautiful landmarks after watching The Gift, or traveling to Spain and trying my hand at the language after binging Money Heist, Elite and a host of other Spanish shows. When a show is released on Netflix, the entire world watches, making it a global event in every sense of the word.

And you thought bingewatching was a waste of time.
