Boards are like the engine driving effective governance, and board meetings are where all the magic happens—decisions are made, and plans come to life.
I've been lucky to be part of some stellar boards with meetings that hit the mark. But it hasn't always been smooth sailing. I've also been stuck in my fair share of long, tedious meetings where nobody knew what we were doing.
It's a shame, especially when you know everyone's keen to make a real impact.
So, here are three ways to make board meetings effective:
1. Keep it Clear: Make sure everyone's on the same page about what they're meant to be doing. Good boards have a clear sense of purpose and know how to make things happen.
2. Get to Know Each Other: Take the time to build genuine relationships with your fellow board members. It makes a difference when you're all on the same wavelength.
3. Plan Ahead: Great board meetings require excellent preparation, and sending out information ahead of time gives everyone a chance to prepare. Start and end on time at the meeting itself and foster an environment of creativity and exchange.
These are all a good start.
