3 Ways Leaders Fall Short

3 Ways Leaders Fall Short

Being a leader can be exciting and rewarding, but it also comes with challenges. Sometimes, even great leaders can make mistakes that affect their teams. When leaders recognize these mistakes, they can take steps to make things better. Here are three common mistakes leaders make and some simple ways to avoid them.

1. Focusing Too Much on “Urgent” Tasks

Leaders often get caught up in dealing with urgent problems—the things that need to be fixed right away. But if leaders only focus on urgent tasks, they may forget about bigger goals and plans. Constantly putting out fires can be tiring and may stop the team from making real progress toward long-term goals.

Why It’s a Problem:

If leaders spend all their time on urgent tasks, it can feel like the team is just reacting to problems instead of moving forward. Team members might feel stressed, and big-picture projects get ignored.

How to Improve:

Leaders can set aside some time each week to think about long-term goals, not just today’s problems. They can make a list to sort tasks by what’s urgent and what’s important but not urgent. This helps leaders balance their time and shows the team that big-picture planning matters too.

2. Not Showing Enough Emotion

Some leaders believe they need to stay serious and strong all the time. They worry that showing feelings, like being happy or frustrated, might make them look weak. But when leaders don’t show emotions, it can make them seem distant or unfriendly, which makes it hard for team members to feel connected to them.

Why It’s a Problem:

When leaders don’t show emotions, their team members might think the leader doesn’t care about them or their work. This can lead to a work environment where people don’t feel appreciated, and they might not want to share their ideas or ask for help.

How to Improve:

Leaders don’t have to share all their feelings, but a little warmth goes a long way. Simple actions, like saying “Thank you for working hard” or asking “Is there anything you need from me?” can show team members that the leader cares about them. This helps team members feel valued and more willing to work together.

3. Forgetting to Learn and Grow

Leaders often spend a lot of time helping their team members grow and get better. But sometimes they forget that they need to keep learning, too. If a leader stops learning new things, their skills can get outdated, and they might miss out on better ways of doing things.

Why It’s a Problem:

When leaders don’t keep learning, they might keep doing things the old way, even if it doesn’t work as well anymore. This can slow down the team and make it harder for them to try new ideas or improve.

How to Improve:

Leaders can set aside time each month to learn something new, like reading books, taking courses, or attending workshops. This shows their team that learning is important, no matter your role. When leaders keep learning, they stay updated and bring new ideas to the team.

Final Thoughts...

Every leader makes mistakes, but they can grow by learning from them. By avoiding these common pitfalls, leaders can build a stronger, happier team and lead with purpose and confidence.

It's funny, but when I was reading through this I was thinking that all three of these apply to business owners -- even solopreneurs. It's easy to get focused on the day-to-day emergencies and never evolve the business. It's easy to hide away the challenges you are facing and never get the advice from others that might help you get out of those challenges. It's also easy to say that you'll do that training, read that book, try that new technology when you've got time, money, energy to spare (which we all know happens never). Thanks for the insights!

Always great thoughts Cory. Leaders don't tend to show emotion. But knowing it's ok to do so is good.
