We can inspire others to the degree that we are inspired. In addition, it can be one of the best ways to overcome burnout!

A 2020 Gallup survey showed that 76% of employees experience burnout on the job at least sometimes, and 28% often or always. This is an alarming statistic, but it could be a game-changer for leaders who choose to see it as an opportunity.

One of the greatest ways to help lift people out of burnout is through intentional gratitude.?

I enjoy what Ben Wigert said in his 2020 article, Employee Burnout: The Biggest Myth: “When people feel inspired, motivated and supported in their work, they do more work - and that work is significantly less stressful on their overall health and wellbeing.”

There are many ways to stay inspired.??

1. I choose to wake up inspired each day.??

I’ve been committed to this act for years and it has lit a fire that keeps me burning and helps others catch fire. As I wake up, I think of things, people, and circumstances that inspire me. I call this waking up gratitude. This simple and consistent act can get us on track to look for the good in any and every situation. Instead of immediately turning my attention to social media and allowing the negative current of our culture to take hold, I’d rather take control by igniting inspiration through gratitude.

2. I intentionally place myself in situations that will stretch me.?

I have a core conviction that humans are meant to never stay the same. This has driven me to put myself in some very uncomfortable situations where I’ve had to step out and be bold and courageous. Personally, it might be taking my family out in a boat even though I was never the captain of my own ship. Professionally, it might be accepting a keynote talk in front of an audience where Inside Out Leadership is a tougher sell. Regardless, I am dedicated to placing myself in situations that will grow me in various ways. When I do, it keeps me fresh. It keeps life flowing like a river rather than stagnant like a pond.

3. I consistently place myself around people who inspire me.??

We all know people in our personal lives, through podcasts, or through books who hit a deep place in our hearts and minds. They pour gasoline on the fire of our souls. This fire becomes intrinsic to our lives without us even realizing it. But how about turning to those in your organization? If you are devoted to knowing them more personally than professionally, they will inspire you more than you know. Each team member has a unique story: passions, things they've overcome, creative ideas, and courageous moments in their life. As leaders, we can get to know our team members and look for the inspiration they are.
