Plenty of self-help resources sing the praises of gratitude, claiming that embracing this simple emotion, even in light of the smallest accomplishment or favor, makes a world of difference in an individual’s professional and personal life.?
Let’s explore three key ways that gratitude affects a person’s professional development and work performance.?
Gratitude is Its Own Reward
Being appreciative of the things you have and the accomplishments you’ve reached has its own way of improving your quality of life. When you feel grateful for the positive elements in your life, you tend to feel better overall , and having a greater sense of well-being makes everyday tasks at work feel more worthwhile.?
Gratitude is Contagious
A happy, healthy person tends to spread positive feelings to others by simply existing in the same proximity. For example, if you’re going to work and keeping a positive, grateful outlook on life, people are going to notice. When people notice your appreciative, approachable attitude, they subconsciously want to get involved with whatever is responsible for the contagious mood you’re in.?
In a work setting, one person’s positive attitude and grateful sentiments can empower the rest of the team to follow suit without even knowing they’re doing it. All they know is that they feel better at work, the tasks they perform feel more meaningful, and they are enjoying this new sense of appreciation.
Being Grateful Makes You More Generous
When you’re thankful for what you’ve earned or been given, you’re more likely to show generosity to others . Because you’ve received something that makes you feel appreciated and grateful for the position you’re in, it’s natural to want to share positivity with others. As such, you’re more likely to give when you’re happy with what you get.?

Focusing on simple gratitude isn’t incredibly challenging. You don’t have to be thankful for every single thing that occurs in your life, whether it’s good or bad. You’ll find that it’s easiest to show appreciation when it happens organically. When someone does a small favor for you, focus on how you feel. When you receive praise for the hard work you completed, let yourself enjoy it. Feeling authentic gratitude is all about paying attention to your thoughts and feelings during life’s positive moments.
