3 Ways to Elevate Arizona's Future Leaders

3 Ways to Elevate Arizona's Future Leaders

This episode's theme: Equity and supporting the leaders of the future.

What happens when the Census undercounts critical minority groups?

It falsely represents the reality of diversity and equity in workplaces and communities.

This leads to the misallocation of funds and resources that could have been used to improve DEI initiatives.

In episode 41 of the Community Collaborative Chris Camacho of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council and Carla Vargas Jasa of Valley of the Sun United Way join us for a conversation about the importance of strong organizational partnerships. Then, April Reed of Ability 360 and Executive Coach Elissa Kelly discuss the diversity and leadership roles.

Here are three things you need to know from the episode.

Make Boardrooms Appropriately Reflect Communities

Equity isn't achieved by simply checking a box. Corporations and businesses should sculpt leadership, from middle management to executives, to reflect the people living and working in the communities they serve. Kelly warns that when too many individuals in decision-making roles are similar, they are more susceptible to Groupthink, which can result in a lack of ability to think critically.

Create Opportunities to Grow, Learn and Develop

Reed explains that being able to shift roles within her organization is likely a major contributing factor to working at Ability360 for 17 years. She also expresses how having mentors who were like her, women with physical disabilities, helped encourage her through difficult times.

Build Paths to Leadership

Many organizations site high diversity numbers. But, when you look at the details, most of the diversity is happening at entry-level positions. When there aren't leaders who can model the path to executive roles for minorities, it makes forging a path a heavy burden for newcomers who try. But, when leaders that reflect communities are placed in high positions, it enables more future leaders to step forward. STN Host and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Arizona, Monica Villalobos, suggests sourcing for board roles in a variety of different ways. One example is to look to the people within your network who meet some of the criteria you're looking for because they likely no someone similar who can fill a role.
