3 Ways to Buy Happiness

Do you want to "make more money" ... AND be happier too?

According to most people, that's hard to do ...

For example, remember Philip Brickman? He's the guy researched lottery winners ... and found that in the end, they were no happier than anyone else. 

Brickman called it the Hedonic Treadmill.

But did you know ...

On May 13, 1982, at the age of 38, Philip Brickman made his way onto the roof of Tower Plaza, the tallest building in Ann Arbor, and jumped. It was a 26-story fall. 

Yes, the man who’d done one of psychology’s foundational studies about happiness ...

Got it all WRONG. 

Money CAN buy you happiness.

By the way, this is what drives me crazy about many ACADEMICS who write about money, sex, negotiation and business: they have no money, sex, negotiation or business. They just write about it.

Think about it this way: the average base salary for a college professor in 2019 is USD 94,868.

That’s NOT a lot of cash beyond buying basic essentials. 

That 94,868 dollar in salary is only about 65,000 dollars after tax.

$65,000?

By comparison, one of my staff bought a $55,000 comic book … yesterday. 

Did he buy happiness? Neither you or I can decide that for him.

But ... from comic books to baseball cards, from airplanes to race cars, going to hockey games, Superbowl tickets, or visiting grandma in Scotland .... I see many people buying "happiness" everyday. 

You don't need to be "rich" to do this, but you do need a slush fund of excess money lying around that you can tap at any time for any reason

And here's what you should spend it on if you want to try to buy "happiness."

The First way to be “money happy” is to spend your money on others.

All the evidence I've seen shows that spending money on others provides you a greater happiness boost than spending money on yourself. I recently gave a friend $10K to go to Peru and study medicinal herbs. I think herbs are kind of bullshit, and I want all my critical medications to say "Manufactured by Pfizer" or "Merck" on them, but that trip make him happy, and that's what brought me great joy as well. 

Second … money buys time. 

When you spend money to save time, your happiness receives a big boost. I work extremely hard a few hours a day so I can spend time with my family the rest of the time ... 

Third, money solves your toughest problems ... fast. 

For example yesterday my doctor said I have some "weird artifacts" in an Xray of my spine. 

Now I need a Lumbar and Sacrum MRI scan (this is a word of caution to all my fell crossfit enthusiasts!)

Doctor: “Oren, unfortunately, your insurance won’t pay for a Sacrum MRI.

ME: Really, well how much can an MRI cost?

Doctor: Each on is about 1200 dollars.

Me: you’re joking right? Order five of them, i don't care if it's 20,000 bucks.

In other words, I'm not going to let myself slowly die in the US healthcare system because of money. You should never be in this situation either. 

Got a health problem? NO PROBLEM. Just reach into your slush fund of excess capital, throw money into the healthcare system and get the best medical care in the world. 

Yes. Money does buy happiness. 

You don't need to be supremely wealthy ...

But If you haven't built that slush fund yet where you can charter a jet, get a specialized medical procedure, buy a $55,000 comic book and send your sister to Nepal to study grasshoppers ..-

... all in the same week ...
