3 Ways to Build Your Influence and Boost Engagement

It’s easy for any leader to fall into the trap of focusing on strategies, results, and metrics.

Unfortunately, while all of those are important, they aren’t the most effective drivers to bring out the best in others.

“No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”

It’s no secret that you have a great deal of experience and knowledge that is beneficial to the people you are leading.

It’s also very important that you share with your people so they can learn from your past mistakes rather than their own.

BUT…

To get people to trust your guidance and engage in the mission you are presenting them, you have to first build trusting relationships where they feel truly valued by their leader. Here’s how you can do that:

1. Listen Actively
Make a genuine effort to understand each individual's perspective. Instead of listening to respond, try listening to understand. The better you get at putting yourself in others’ shoes, the more equipped you will be to give them valuable advice, and the more trust you will build.

2. Specific Praise
A generic “good job” doesn’t carry the same weight as recognizing someone's unique contribution. Acknowledge specific things people are doing well and express your gratitude in a way that resonates with each person.

3. Lead by Example
If you’re a “do as I say, not as I do” leader, then you are setting yourself up for failure. No one responds well to a leader who doesn’t live up to the standard they set for others. So, remember to not only set a standard for others, but BE the standard for others.

Practice these 3 things and you will quickly begin to build trust amongst your team, grow your influence, and boost productivity throughout your workplace.
