3 ways to battle racial fatigue: Repair. Recover. Recommit.

Feeling a little weary these days with the continuous conversations about racial inequities? I am exhausted, mentally and physically. Daily conversations about the fate of Black people, whether it's in dialogue with other Black people or non Blacks, the weight has taken a toll. During the battle, it's important to pause and reassess.

Step 1 Recover

This is the self-care regimen. Take the time to prioritize your well being. This may include taking a few days off work, meditation, exercise. While it's hard to switch your environment during quarantine, taking a few small measures may be helpful. Try turning off your video on a zoom call for a day, relieve the pressure of becoming presentable when you may not be in the mood. Put a sign on your bedroom door with a lock that reads "I am not here today".

Step 2 Repair

During this time you have learned a whole lot about others, some for the good and some for the worst. Whether it's opposing political views, unconscious and conscious biases, fragility, we will not always see the same side of the coin. However, we still need to find harmony in our operating environment. Work to find common ground with people you disagree with, offer support and resources for those who want to be a better ally. Work to find mutual understanding and respect. And for a the small group that you just can't help, who are just too toxic to exist in your life, put them on your prayer list, and relieve yourself of being the savior.

Step 3 Recommit

I know, I know you don't really feel like getting back in the game, but the game needs you. You matter, you have a voice, a perspective, and a range of influence. Perhaps you will fine tune your approach to become more percussive and effective. Re-tool, gather more insights, find allies, share the weight. Celebrate small wins!

So when you are feeling a boulder on your back, give yourself permission to excuse yourself. Continue to check in with yourself on a regular cadence and breathe, keep the faith, we are going to be here for a while.
