3 VITAL COMPONENTS TO SCALING YOUR IT/MSP

When you’re starting out it’s all about effort pure and simple. Like a rocket trying to defeat the gravitational pull of the earth, it’s about maximum power for lift off. But after that it gets more complicated.

And that’s where the challenges begin because pure effort alone is not enough for scaling up and it’s where IT/MSPs get stuck.?It doesn’t matter whether it’s just you, you and a few others or an established team where you’re exceeding a million or two in revenue.

At some point, you’ll get stuck. Stuck because you can’t see beyond where you are and how to get to the next level so you find yourself on a plateau.?At best, it’s ok providing an O-K-A-Y way of life.?At worst, it’s consuming and draining.

It happens to all businesses at some point and particularly IT/MSPs but the real question is for how long?

I was a classic example of this in the first business I ran in Budapest.?Massive hard work ruled the day and it worked...but it was draining.?But I was young and of the belief that sheer hard work was what you had to do.?Little did I know…

It wasn’t till a few years later that I began to realise that scaling a business wasn’t just about sheer hard work that the penny dropped.?As such I took the hardest route, fun as it was at the time.?Why did I think working all-nighters and weekends was some sort of badge of honour?

How many more servers and system outages do you enjoy ignoring the family for?

You see I was focused on one thing – the opportunity – so I was selling as fast as I could till I got to a point where I was stuck.?At the time, I didn’t realise there were three vital components to scaling a business: Ambition, Opportunity and Capacity.

  • Ambition ensures you have direction so you can trust you have the right plan
  • Opportunity ensures you’re focused on where the profit lies so the business can pay you your worth
  • And capacity ensures you have leverage so your IT/MSP works for you and not you for it

They don’t sound all that thrilling on their own however if your business is established then you need to be clear about how they work together otherwise your business will get stuck and you’ll be feeling it in frustration, overwork and/or a lack of reward, being cash in your pocket.
