The Expert with no real track record - I get it. It is so much easier to act as an expert than actually to be one.
Here's what truly defines an expert in most fields.
They understand that solving complex issues can't be accomplished with bumper stickers, motivational memes, and zero conflict.
Experts understand there is no "single process" or "formula to follow" because what may work for you will not work for someone else.
They understand that not everyone is going to like or agree with them or their opinions, observations, and insights.
Experts understand the roles biases play in decision making - including theirs.
Experts understand the importance of math.
Figures matter, and people who can't figure - end up not mattering.
The Job Seeker Advice Giver
These people maybe some of the more insidious types on the platform.
We have all been in that vulnerable spot of looking for a job or new clients. For some of us, our confidence level may not be at an all-time high.
We may have even tried the necessary common sense tactics and come up empty-handed.
We might be down on our luck.
They are telling us that everything is going to be okay and that there are good people out there. Those things are right - in the real world. But remember online isn't the real world.
Or worse, they encourage us to believe that we can be anything as long as we put our minds to it.
That may be enough to lure us into their long-term con - capturing your engagement - to increase their views.
The Strategic Connector
They want to connect with us because they feel we can help them. They can be friendly and supportive on the front side. We won't even realize what's going on.
However, once they get whatever it is that they wanted from us - they become a ghost.
They only return when they want something.

5 年I really really appreciate this, I am an active job seeker. It has been a crazy adventure. I have got my resume in some hiring managers hands, I ended up in a vacation club, and learned somethings the hard way.

5 年Hi Roger, I was introduced to you through Antoni Tzavelas. Good article but I would be open to debating the strategic connector as a person "not to be" on LinkedIn. I connect strategically with HR managers because I want to have healthy dialogue with people who are in the business of developing other people. While some may one day become clients, most will not, and I value all of my connections equally. I would actually prefer to have more followers than connections because following someone represents a choice you make without being invited to connect. It's something you do because you want to, not because you feel like you have to do.
