3 Types of Business English Learners
Steven Hobson
I help non-native English-speaking managers and leaders to master business English by speaking with clarity, impact and confidence. 20+ Years Experience | 1000+ Students
In this article, I give an overview of three types of business English learners together with strategies for each learner profile to develop fluency and increase confidence in using the language.
Learner 1: You seek more opportunities to converse spontaneously in English
This type of learner has a good foundation in English and can get their message across to others. However, they feel the need to be 'sharper' and speak more fluently when speaking English spontaneously at work.
The best way to increase sharpness and fluency is to get consistent speaking practice and converse about a different range of topics in a spontaneous setting. Speaking about topics of interest, such as leadership and self-development, instead of irrelevant ones in English coursebooks is a must for this type of learner. Being engaged and learning something useful and relevant 'through' English is an incredibly powerful approach.
Learner 2: You recognise that traditional methods are not working for you and need an approach specific to your needs
I've had clients mention that after completing a traditional English program they didn't see a noticeable improvement.
The reason for this is that the English taught in the classroom isn't aligned with the reality in which they use English at work. Even if it is a business English course, what the learner really needs compared to what they are taught can often be way off.
As an example of this, working on cultivating a confident mindset specific to speaking English as a second language at work is often key for this type of learner's progress. However, traditional institutions neglect this aspect and only focus on the linguistic part.
Ideally, this learner needs one-to-one sessions with a customized program tailored to their specific challenges or a go-to business English resource that tackles the challenges they face head-on.
Learner 3: You enjoy learning at your own pace and want a reliable 'go-to' resource for business English development
This type of learner prefers self-study over guided individual help. They may have an unpredictable work schedule that doesn't cater for fixed classes or they are simply independent when it comes to learning.
This learner needs a go-to, self-study digital resource that is, first, 100% credible and top quality. Second, It has to be very well organized to prevent needless time wasting. Third, it has to be user-friendly and easy to navigate. Finally, it needs to have content that is aligned with the learner's day-to-day English usage and their challenges. Content such as expression lists for meetings and presentations work well for this learner.
