LinkedIn newsletters are a great way to reach a new and wider audience with your written content.
Prior to last week, the newsletter feature was only available to selected users at LinkedIn’s discretion (there was always some mystery as to how these were decided), but as of now, all LinkedIn users have access to it - providing you’ve switched on LinkedIn Creator Mode on your profile.
If you’re one of the many users that has just got access to newsletters, congratulations!
It’s very exciting, but if you’re now scratching your head about what to do with it, this article will help.
Top tips for your first LinkedIn newsletter
I’ve had LinkedIn newsletter for close to 18 months now and it’s been a great tool for building my audience and my LinkedIn coaching business.
Based on this, here are my top 3 tips on how you can get started and make the most of it.
1) Decide your theme, title and promise
Your theme is what you’re going to write about in your newsletters.
Make this broad enough to give you room to breathe but narrow enough to have a targeted niche audience as your readers.
(Side note: You do not want to write for any and everyone - this is a bad idea in business, and it’s definitely a bad idea for LinkedIn newsletters.)
Your title needs to be relevant to your theme, so people know exactly what they’re going to get from the get-go, but interesting enough to stand out in the noise (especially as right now newsletter subscriptions invitations are going out like crazy).
Your promise is what people can expect to receive from you in your newsletters in exchange for their time and attention.
Again, like the theme, this should be both broad and narrow.
Here’s an example of the theme, title and promise of my own LinkedIn newsletter (side note: hit the subscribe button to get notified when I post a new article):

2) Commit to a realistic schedule
Whether you do your newsletter weekly, bi-monthly, or monthly doesn’t really matter. What matters is that you pick a REALISTIC schedule and commit to it - consistency is key.
Don’t over-promise with this one - it’s better to say you’ll post once a month and end up doing twice, than the other way round.

3) Provide useful ever-green content
Newsletter articles are different from regular posts because they have a permanent place on your profile and can be accessed by any LinkedIn user at any time (I have articles from years ago that people still like and comment on today).
With this in mind, use your newsletter to provide useful ever-green content that will still be valuable to your audience whether they read it today or in 8 months’ time.
Leave the fluffy stuff for your daily posts. Go deep on your newsletters.
Bonus tip - getting subscribers to your newsletters
Since I launched my LinkedIn newsletter nearly 18 months ago, the subscriber count has gone up and up in the thousands with every edition I put out (22 editions so far, counting this one).
I currently have over 26,000 subscribers and I put this down to following the three tips I shared with you here.
If you follow all three of these tips, you will see a steady increase in your newsletter subscribers with every edition you put out.
Good content targeted at a niche audience and delivered on a predictable schedule will naturally attract followers and subscribers.
That said, it doesn’t hurt to let people know the action you want them to take at the end of your newsletters.
Like I’m about to do now.
So..... leave a comment if this article has been helpful!
And if you’ve already launched your newsletter, share the topic and link below and let’s help you get some new subscribers :-)
