3 Tips To Rewrite The Rules Of Work For Professional Fulfillment

Have you ever wondered why work can feel so hard... and you feel like you are on a hamster wheel where nothing changes.

I don’t think anyone wants to live a life where work is a burden? Do you?

So what is the definition of a RULE?

An accepted principle or instruction that states the way things are or should be done, and tells you what you are allowed or are not allowed to do

In the ever-evolving landscape of work, the pursuit of professional fulfillment has taken center stage. The traditional rules that once dictated the path to success are now being redefined especially after COVID, paving the way for a new era of work where individuality, innovation, and fulfillment are the driving forces.

"Can we really change the rules?" you may ask......

Of course you can.

It's your choice, your rules, your life.

Here are 3 tips to rewrite the rules to discover the keys to a professionally fulfilling life.

1. Embrace Your Uniqueness:

"Your uniqueness is your magic." - Anonymous

That's right, we ALL have the ability to live a life of our dreams to do the work we love, but that niggling doubt seems to stop you in your tracks. So we skip over it and spend our life serving others.

It seems for many, their true identity is lost in translation, not knowing who they are, too scared to change - with a whole load of?internal conflicts wrapped into the equation. Being the parent, being the wife/husband, being the manager, serving others – ?Fitting into society and forgetting who they really are with an outdated belief system of settling for the mediocre.

Part of you wants to have your own business or do something that fires you with passion but the other part needs to stay safe and secure so that you can play out all the other identity roles that are expected of you.

It’s a powerless and stagnant place.

Many of my clients and women in particular often have felt that they “Must”’ or “Should” do things based on engrained beliefs from the past that have unconsciously taken away their choice to be and do what they are meant to be. It's like a rope that held them back from reaching the things they want until they run out of fight.

It’s exhausting, it’s frustrating and it's mentally draining.

The rules of work were written over 100 years ago for men and by men, because women were not really present in the workplace.

Gone are the days of fitting into predefined molds. Today, success lies in embracing your uniqueness regardless of what others think, and leveraging it to make a distinctive impact.

It's time to change and embrace your uniqueness - If we were all the same, life would be extremely boring!

So what can you do?

Ask yourself these 2 questions...

  1. What makes you different?
  2. What part of you is holding you back?

Whether it's your approach to problem-solving or your creative flair, allow your individuality to shine. This means having the confidence in yourself to be visible and speak up - creating a strong belief system about yourself to celebrate what makes you different. This is a strong catalyst for professional fulfillment.

Success is yours if you believe it!

2. Redefine Success on Your Terms

"The only definition of success that matters is yours." - Unknown

If you are anything like me, I grew up with a family who believed you had to work hard to be a success.

Many clients I work with are suffering with a unique brand of identity crisis that’s left them with a whole load of self- doubt about themselves, played out by behaviours of procrastination and the fear of failure, perfectionism of "having to have it right", or working so hard and getting burnt out because they they don't feel good enough.

Let’s go back to the 60’s and 70’s where the perception given was that "hard work" was essential for success. Watching parents work hard, they had little time for family. Work hard, support the family.. It’s just something they had to do. Work and success had a negative meaning of strife and compromise.

Do you catch yourself saying...

Work is hard, boring, and thankless but I have to stay because I need to earn money

Work is difficult – I’m so drained I never have time to look after myself

Work is something I must do – I need to make my family proud. My family will never forgive me if I left to do my own thing

I have to work hard to make lots of money – Everyone relies on me, I don’t know what else to do?

?If you say it...guess what.... it becomes your reality

When you say these things you automatically put yourself into a place of lack or scarcity attached by emotions of frustrations, fear, self-doubt. You’ll behave in this way, hide away from opportunities, afraid to say what you want, feel demotivated and powerless.

So what can you do?

?Just imagine if you really wanted to go for a new opportunity

?Just for today – start asking yourself the following.....

1.???? What does success actually mean to you? (and not for anyone else) How does that?feel?

2.???? What does the word work mean to you? If it is negative, how can you reframe it?

.....and if you don’t believe it...start taking some actions to change it

You’ll? start to ignite your passions - ?Your choice, your rules

3.Embrace a Culture of Innovation

"Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." - Steve Jobs

The rules of work are evolving, and innovation and creativity are the driving force behind this transformation. Rather than adhering strictly to established norms, start to embrace a culture of innovation.

When you are being innovative and trusting and believing in yourself to do things differently you'll start to embrace the ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT from within. A magnetic force of attraction where others start to follow you and your vision.

You become the leader of your own game, an open mind to a bigger picture of the world of work, fostering excitement and a new sense of freedom.

Whether its starting a new project, a change of role or moving into your own business,

So what can you do?

  1. Be bold and believe and trust in yourself - foster the entrepreneurial spirit . You can read about this here (5 ways to foster an Entrepreneurial Spirit)
  2. Be open to new ideas and surround yourself with positive people
  3. Challenge the status quo, and foster an environment that encourages creativity. In doing so, you not only enhance your professional fulfillment but also contribute to the evolution of your workplace.

Conclusion

As we rewrite the rules of work, let's remember that professional fulfillment is a personal journey. It's about embracing your uniqueness, defining success on your terms and fostering innovation. Remember prioritizing yourself for the work and life that you feel passionate about, shouldn't be a hard slog. You have the choice to change it. EMBRACE IT!

In the words of Albert Einstein,

"Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow."
