3 Tips How to Share your Business or Career Journey in a Book

Do you want to share your business or career journey in a book and empower others with your experience?

Then you are in the right place.

I’ve recorded a video and explore how to discover what type of book to write if you want to share your knowledge your experience to empower others to learn more about the past that you might have taken without you feeling overwhelmed and losing sight of what that big idea is that you want to share.

Here you can access the Video: Click here , you’ll have to click again when LinkedIn warns you, as this link takes you to You Tube

However, you can also continue reading as this is the transcript of the Video:

You see getting started can be tricky for people but once you think you are ready and you want to get started, just writing will not necessarily put you on the path to something that really is going to share your idea or your expertise.

Let's have a look first of all, what different types of books you might be considering.

So there are memoir style like books, there are type of self-help books to share and show how others can help themselves in the way you did.

Or perhaps like a career guide.

There are so many different ones.

Now it is not about naming or directing which one it is but it is knowing what sort of a style to write in.

And that comes about when you start looking a little bit closer at what exactly it is that you want to write about.

So, let's use as an example, the area of leadership.

Perhaps leadership coaching; there are many variations of leadership working with leaders who are in the area of leadership coaching for example.

Let's just have a quick look at these:

…executive leadership coaching, transformational leadership, training team leadership development.

And you may very well work in all of those or have experience and all of those have been part of your journey.

But your book focus wants to be on one of those and you want to drill in deeper before you just write.

So, if it's an executive leadership coaching area that you want to put the focus on, and we're thinking about developing leadership skills and strategies tailored specifically to executives and high level managers, perhaps to enhance their effectiveness.

If we're looking at that area, that will already be a different readership, for example, to a team leadership development area when you're coaching in that area and training helping leaders, building their teams, developing them for those leaders to build effective teamwork so that they can work with teams in a better constructive and effective way.

That would be a very different approach to your book. You wouldn't be looking at a different title for your book you would be looking at going deeper in that particular area and the readership is different to team leadership development than executive leadership coaching for example, sometimes, this is misunderstood when people start writing, they just jump in and write.

But we've also got other areas to consider, let's say something to do about a business.

You want to have a look at what is your very specific or point of difference is and you want to have that clearly mapped out for yourself before you go and start writing.

So, here are the three tips that I want to share with you today in this video:

TIP NUMBER 1:

Don’t start writing but start with questioning your intention.

What is it you want to achieve by having a book?

What is it you want the book to do?

And what are some specific areas of difference of your career path?

How did your career path elevate your into a leadership role, perhaps, that you want to share what happened?

You may have had a lot of hurdles to overcome but how unique are they and what else is behind that?

So, looking at what's a real big point of difference, something that would be instantly appealing and clear to those that want to read your book and want to know your story.

Sharing different angles, new ways of writing about it, is what is required.

Question what it is you want to achieve, this questioning can take some time.

And it's really a good idea not to do the writing until you've done this questioning of yourself or have somebody question you that is knowledgeable in how to ask the questions to layer and whoever what it is that's your point of difference.

And sometimes you can even turn an idea completely by 180 degrees and come from the complete opposite rather than what you initially had in mind.

To make it successful and powerful and really able to empower others with your journey or with a story of your journey, whether that is your career, how you climbed the ladder in leadership, or build your business, how you managed to build something perhaps from nothing.

There are various different angles.

So tip number one is to question, question ask question after question to find out what the real layer is that you want to write about.

?

TIP NUMBER 2

And number two, my tip number two is that you then going to plan how you will inspire.

I've already touched on will it be a memoir style one, and this wants to be very specific to make it appealing to the reader.

Who will the reader be, and that will depend on what your area of expertise or the career path is that you have?

And again, you want to dig into the unique point that you've experienced.

Was it something to do perhaps geographically, is it something to do as I already said before, perhaps culturally, was it something around a particular very specific skill that you discovered?

There are so many different ways a self-help book, for example, would be more writing at the end of each chapter something like: ‘these are the steps to get to this first point’,? or “here are some exercises for you to do’, for example.

So that could be a self-help style.

Maybe more of a career guide, with some how to step by step in your career, of whatever the particular career path that you took was.

How did you know when the point of change was there, if it was about a career change?

Is there something unique in there that you want to convey to the reader and therefore share to empower others to perhaps follow your journey or lifestyle.

Or is it something to change from what the reader is doing now to change it to have a more integrated authentic lifestyle for themselves, perhaps that you have experienced.

So there are very many different finer details. Each type of those style of books or genres we can call them, will have a different readership, a different audience that you will be addressing through the content of your book.

And it is important to have this mapped out before you get started.

So tip number two is learn how we are going to inspire and in planning how you're going to inspire you will discover who you want to inspire, who that reader is going to be.

?

TIP NUMBER 3

And tip number three for today is get help with that initial planning, even if you are perhaps more inclined to do a lot of the other work yourself, all of the writing, for example, get help with the planning FIRST.

Have someone from the outside help you to come and guide you and point out things that you cannot see from the point you are at right now.
