3 Tips to get you started on your Career Change Roadmap

Changing career can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be.

The thoughts of changing career can feel overwhelming and intimidating. This is the main reason why people would rather stay in a familiar environment even though they are feeling unfulfilled and unhappy. It’s a price they are willing to pay to avoid going through a big change.

Making that change may seem disruptive and difficult and therefore the fear of the unknown keeps you stuck.

So what can we do to encourage ourselves to take a leap of faith?

Before you do anything else you need to look at what is causing you to be fearful when making the change.

Get writing….

Start making a list of all the reasons a career change is a must for you and write down everything that scares you about it.

Don’t hold back on this! Write everything out that frustrates you about it. Give yourself permission to word vomit and let it all out. No one else will be reading this so spill the beans on what your biggest fear is.

Look for clues….

Look out for what’s important to you. Maybe you value security and you are afraid the new venture won’t offer this.

Or maybe you haven’t had an interview for a while and the thought of one scare’s the hell out of you.

Spend time on this to see where the fear is coming from. Once you know what is stopping you, then you can work towards erasing the fear from whatever is holding you back.

It’s like seeing a magic trick for the first time and wondering how it’s been done. But as soon as you learn how the trick is performed, the illusion of the trick is broken.

We can apply the same to a fearful situation. Once we know what is causing us to feel fearful, we can then break the illusion and review the situation differently.

 Acquire external support….

Trying to decide on what path to take and how to go about it can send your fear into auto drive.

Gaining support from friends and family may help with feeling overwhelmed by it all.

If you don’t have anyone that you feel you could share this with, you could always hire a Coach to help you combat the fear and work towards your dream job.

They will offer support, help you to be accountable and they will help you see your strengths.

When we are riddled with fear, we are unable to think logically or rationally. A coach will help you eradicate the fear so that you can enjoy the journey of the new venture.

Being full of fear sucks and it can keep you paralysed from making good choices. But you don’t have to let it control your life.

So pick a small action you can to today and prioritise your new venture.

Try something small like start on updating your CV or Profile on LinkedIn. If you are thinking of starting your own small business, make a start on a business plan.

Small actions will break the feeling of fear and will help you from feel more confident in yourself.
