3 Tips To Get Motivated (Using Memory Skills)

Lacking motivation? Being in such unprecedented times can cause a lot of uncertainty. Whilst some can naturally get pumped, it can be a mental drain and super effort just to bring oneself up for the occasion. Here is a cool approach using memory techniques and principles to help you get motivated.

1. Create a strong visual

Memory training isn't repetition. It's encoding data that doesn't make sense into visual imagery. If you're not feeling motivated the first thing to do is encode whatever it is you need to be motivated for. This will not only give you a clearer picture, but build a foundation to strengthen your motivation.

For example, find what you need to be motivated for and visualize it. E.g. I need to exercise. Try to visualize the exercise you love doing, or the end result of having exercised. Where are you running? Walking? Cycling? and so on. Go deep into the environment.

2. Build a Story

Often what lets us down is the negative script that is written in one's mind which can lead to all sorts of problems. Positive stories can drive positive outcomes. Creating a story is establishing a connection. Connection equals memory. Memory equals remembering. As you can see these are all connected and play an important part mentally. How can you build a story for motivation?

Taking the above example for exercising, we can extend on the visual already created. For example, picturing in greater detail the route your jogging, cycling, walking, etc. If you're swimming visualizing every stroke and how closer you are to the other side. Try and get deep into detail and visualize as much as you can and then create a little story of the order of events from starting exercising to finishing up. Think of it similar to meditation. In fact, use this as meditation!

3. Use Emotion

Now that you have created your story, you can take it to the next level using emotion. How does it feel exercising. How does it feel afterwards? Do you have more energy? Do you feel more confident? Any positive emotion that exercise draws out from you, use that. Emotion adds depth to your story and creates deeper connection.

So simply explained but such a powerful exercise How often do you reckon one must do it.. and what time of the day?
