There’s no right or wrong way to build a content calendar. And there are plenty of free templates around. So as you develop a basic template, ask yourself, how do you make a visual content calendar people will use??

Here are three powerful tips that form a solid starting point:

  1. Define your goals. As with any action you take regarding strategy, you need to figure out your why. You may decide to do it for SEO and visibility. Or you want to get more leads, video watches, or subscribers. Whatever you define, that goal dictates the strategy and tactics.
  2. Catalog your existing assets. While you’re freshening up some posts, take stock of how many you have and how you can repurpose them. Repurposing old content takes some of the pressure off. One piece can turn into several other assets. For example, you can pluck out key points in a blog post and turn them into social media microblogs. You can also turn videos into slide decks.?
  3. Pick your channels and frequency. It’s tempting to be everywhere at once. But the smart move is to live on the same channel your audience does. If they live on LinkedIn, focus on LinkedIn. Staying on one or two relevant media is less stressful.?

On top of that, set a manageable cadence and stick to it. For example, if you post three times a week on Instagram and once a week on Pinterest, keep that schedule. It may be a cold start, but consistency warms audiences up.
