3 Tips for Boosting Ransomware Defense

3 Tips for Boosting Ransomware Defense

Peyta and its ilk just make you WannaCry. Of course, ransomware attacks are no joke and must be proactively addressed if SMBs are to survive the next new threat or variant. Consider these five precautionary strategies to harden your enterprise against ransomware and other cyberattacks.

Prioritize Patching: Applying updates quickly is an effective measure in preventing exploits. Often, however, IT staff's lack of time, resources or asset visibility-or their fear of patch-related disruptions-can leave systems dangerously exposed. Just one vulnerability can lead to system wide disaster. Knowing these challenges, experts still recommend shooting for a 100 percent patch rate.

Rethink Backups: Once regarded mostly as a means to recover core systems from natural disasters, regular backups have become a first-line defense against cyberattacks. If it's been a while since your protocols were reviewed, it's probably time to check backup frequency, and adjust the schedule to minimize the effects of a sudden cyberattack. It may also be wise to assess backup breadth/depth to determine whether previously 'expendable' data should now be saved (for strategic or regulatory reasons).

Stiffen Digital Workspaces: The collective resources available to users-apps, data, documents and communication services-is called their digital workspace. Best management practices include restricting access to the resources users truly need, and closely governing the space with rules, such as application whitelisting.

Don't fall victim to the next ransomware scourge. Call TeamLogic IT today to discuss these and other protection and prevention strategies.
