3 Tips for Becoming CEO

3 Tips for Becoming CEO

During our Associate and Shareholders’ week in June, several associates stopped me and said, “I want your job someday.” My reply: “Great! Come get it!” I love to see associates thinking like that – believing in themselves and wanting to lead.

So, how do you get here? It’s a question I get asked a lot. People want to know how to move ahead in their careers.

Here’s my advice:

  1. Get today’s job right. Whatever you’ve been asked to do – whatever your role is now – do it really well and do it with integrity. Deliver results. Getting the job you want always starts with excelling at the one you have.
  2. Be a great teammate. I grew up playing sports and loved being part of a team. Looking back on it now, I realize that learning to help others as a peer develops your leadership skills. The best leaders lead through influence and collaboration regardless of their title. Be the teammate others want to work with.
  3. Take on something extra and hard. Look around at things that just aren’t getting done. Maybe there’s a project you could tackle. Maybe there’s an issue that always gets back-burnered for other priorities. Challenge yourself to take on those difficult assignments. They’re learning opportunities, and you have a chance to change something for the better. And, people tend to notice and recognize your leadership characteristics.

If you do these three things, something great can happen: it’s easy for people to picture you in bigger roles, and you become a low-risk promotion. You’ve demonstrated your skills, your leadership and your drive. Your manager can imagine you in the next job because you’ve already shown you can do it.

Your future’s waiting for you. Come get it!

Thanks for information share.

Driver Coordinator at Walmart Transportation

Hello Doug, just a note to let you know about the associates displacement changes at 6811. On Dec. 6, 2019. One Longevity associate was able to stay while 4 other longevity associates were laid off. My concern is why didn’t Walmart follow the correct rules on letting all longevity associates go and why did favoritisms play a role at our dispatch office at 6811. According to HR and our Ops manager at 6811 this was best for the company. We were not given any flexibility to sign up for the new position as a transportation Coordinator. We were strip of everything except our 401k. Granted that we were aloud a small severance pay. I ‘am Thankful of what Walmart has done for me.
