3 things you should do to get a job using LinkedIn

After helping several international students in their transitions between college and the first job in Canada, I realized the most effective moves you can do when it comes to LinkedIn to boost your success.

I'm not talking about magic moves. It may sound obvious, but if you do the basics properly, the chances are that everything else will work in your favour.

But what are the most effective moves you can do? Today, I'll share the three things you should do to get a job using LinkedIn.

Let's dive in together.

  1. Be specific
  2. Update your summary?
  3. Add connections related to your industry

Be specific

I know that you may consider some alternatives when you are looking for a job. It's part of the game, and flexibility is required for sure.

The problem is that from external eyes, you should be concise and clear about your abilities as a potential candidate.

The attention span spent by a recruiter nowadays is very low. Nobody is going to waste energy understanding the line between your profile.

Look for the position with a higher level of potential and invest your best to shape your LinkedIn profile for that role. Trying to position yourself capable of different roles can overwhelm recruiters when analyzing you.

It's a kind of exercise where you have to decide what to cut instead of adding it. It's hard, I know, but for the sake of your application is the best move you can consider to assess your progress and test attractive you are as a candidate.

Before deciding what position you'll invest your efforts in, talk with people in the same role. Look for their characteristics, patterns, and all key components crucial for them to get a job in that position.?

Update your summary?

The summary is the most flexible space on your LinkedIn profile.?

This section allows you to use 2000 characters to describe you and your main achievements that will position you as a strong candidate.

Try to compose your summary in a way that it can be skimmed in 30 seconds or less.?

List your career focus and components of work, including industry-related keywords, core skills, talents, strengths, and interests.

Bullet points are a great option to organize your summary clearly. Use and abuse of them.

Pro tip: Look for the summary section in other profiles, analyzing them as if you were a recruiter. See if you can identify the strengths by skimming the summary in less than 30 seconds. I'll see how important it is to be concise and clear about what you do.

Add connections related to your industry

Some people say that it is crucial to be ranked in LinkedIn to have over 500 connections. Well...Maybe yes, but I would say that the number is not the main factor in this equation.

Quality matters.

Pay attention first to the quality of your contacts. Are they related to your industry? Are they interesting as a valuable connection for you? Your connections should have synergy with your industry.?

From there, you may start thinking about numbers, building networking of strong and relevant connections.

Make sense?
