3 Things You Need to Succeed in an Aussie Business

If it were easy to start a successful business everyone you know would be an entrepreneur by now. Many think that you need an earth-shaking industry disrupting idea to succeed. The truth though is much simpler. To create a multi-million dollar business in Australia, you need consistency and drive. I know this because thirteen years ago I started a company that now sells over $7.5 million dollars worth of promotional merchandise annually.
While today my promotional product business is a market leader, with a large team of dedicated employees working alongside me here in Australia, when I first started out it was just me, a telephone, and a challenge to create something worthwhile.
If you, like me, are determined to turn your dreams into an entrepreneurial success story, then you'll want to follow my blueprint for how to create a multi-million dollar business. Use this guide to avoid common pitfalls and to put yourself in the right state of mind for financial prosperity.
Traditional Values Still Count – Be Honest Ethical
In the rush to be a business that is technologically savvy, disrupting, game changing and all the fancy catch phrases sometimes people forget about the most basic of business values. That is to be honest and ethical. At the end of the day, people will use your product or service if they Know Like and Trust you.
Make everything you do polished and personalised especially for the products and services you offer. People want to buy from someone they know and trust, and modern digital services cannot replicate this fundamental consumer behaviour.
If you have an entrepreneurial state of mind then know that everything you do has to be honest and ethical. I insist in my business that core client relation functions are done in Australia by Australians and that we are open and honest in everything. Traditional values and being perceived as dependable counts for everything.
Procrastination and the Mental Leap
I want you to tell me; do you find it easy to imagine yourself as a successful business person, with lots of money, all the time in the world, respect from your peers, happy clients and all-around awesomeness? The good news is it's pretty easy to picture yourself as a success. The bad news is that it can hard to keep this positivity up as you start to tackle the everyday aspects of running your own business.
Aspiring entrepreneurs more often than not, begin by mentally drowning themselves with doubt and negative thoughts. The mental process goes like this for many people:
- What if no one likes what I have to offer?
- What if there are too many competitors?
- What if someone copies me?
- What if I cannot pay the bills if I start doing this?
Feel free to copy and paste another dozen or so "what if" statements that mentally stop you from even embarking on your entrepreneurial adventure.
The solution to overcoming your mental block and finally starting your journey? Set micro goals.
Setting Micro Goals
Micro goals are exciting, the small achievements they bring will make you feel productive and pump you full of adrenalin. Accomplishing micro goals is also incredibly addictive.
If you are prone to procrastinating, then set tiny goals to being with. Perhaps something as simple as taking 5 minutes out each day to research something. Aim to increase this each day.
Set yourself achievable mini goals and then kick them down one by one. After a while move the goal posts further, and you'll begin to find that you're making serious long-term progress by simply tackling lots of smaller tasks that add up to something much bigger. Make no mistake, the first set of micro goals is the hardest, and this is where 95% of people will stumble and fall. Don't let one stumble hold you back, pick yourself up and start with another micro goal instead.
