If you want to drastically increase exposure for you and your brand and become recognised on a wider scale as the expert on your topic, an effective way of doing that is by getting into mainstream media.
Do this consistently and not only will you be reaching more people and calling them into your space, but you’ll also be building trust and credibility with your existing audience, who will be seeing you pop up all over the place being endorsed by people and brand names they recognise.
It’s powerful stuff!
If you want to make this happen, there are 3 things you need to know.
1. Your story
To be featured in the media, go in with an angle that’s interesting and relevant to people who don’t know you. Be honest with yourself and get creative!
Sometimes, people tell me that they don’t have a story – that is never true, there’s always a story.
It doesn’t need to be rags to riches or some shocking event, but it does need to interest the audience of the media outlet you are aiming to be featured in.
Which brings me to...
2. Where you want to be featured
It’s rarely effective to send a blanket pitch to everywhere you can think of – this feels the same to the journalist as it feels for you when someone turns up in your inbox screaming ‘buy my shit’ and if you keep sending irrelevant pitches, you are highly unlikely to be able to grab that journalist’s attention when you actually do have something that may pique their interest.
So, write a list of outlets that:
- You would like to be featured in
- That are likely to be interested in your story
- Who you need to pitch to
Then go for it!
3. How to pitch.
Approach the outlets in the most meaningful way.
While the newsroom contact details are quite often found by doing a Google search, it is much more effective to contact the journalist directly.
Do bear in mind that their inbox will be flooded with pitches already – you need to cut through the noise.
Your pitch is way more likely to be noticed if you have already built a relationship with that person, if it's a topic they are likely to be interested in (do your research) and if it’s written in a way that will grab their attention, without being misleading.
Conjure up a powerful headline that intrigues and then
present your pitch in a way that’s clear, concise and straight to the point while also showing personality and depth.
Do this consistently - it’s not enough to send a pitch every now and again and hope for the best. I recommend getting into a daily practice and constantly coming up with new and relevant angles.
Of course, if you prefer not to do it yourself, we can take it all off your hands so that you are being pitched to the right people every day who we have already built up relationships with.
This means you can reap the benefits and are guaranteed the results, while you stay focused on other parts of your business.
Our DFY media service is suitable for you if:
- You have an established business and you want more exposure.
- You are clear on your message, your offers and who you want to call in.
- You have a strong marketing strategy and social media presence.
If you hit all of the above, DM me and we’ll talk about how we can get you featured in media such as the BBC, The Telegraph, The Today Show and FOX.
